Miami Dade College to Host a Conference on “Reconciliation and Change: The German Experience” Oct. 4

Miami Dade College - Wolfson Campus

Miami, September 23, 2013 - Hoping to learn from the post-war evolution and reintegration of German society, Miami Dade College (MDC) will present a discussion titled “Reconciliation and Change: The German Experience,” Friday, Oct. 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami. The event, which is convened by the Cuba Study Group, will be hosted by the College’s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Initiatives (CLACI), the Department of Social Sciences at MDC and is cosponsored by the Cuban Research Institute of Florida International University.

The presentation, part of the project on Justice in Times of Transition by the Cuba Study Group and CLACI’s Peace Building Series, will explore Germany’s experience with reunification at the end of the Cold War and will consider if possible lessons could be drawn for Cuba. Distinguished panelists include Gunther Nooke, personal representative for Africa of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, former Federal Commissioner for Human Rights Policy at the German Federal Foreign Office, and co-founder of the East German opposition movement “Demokratischer Aufbruch”; Dieter Dettke, adjunct graduate professor at the BMW Center for German and European Studies in Georgetown University and former U.S. Representative and Executive Director of the Washington Office of the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Foundation; Rt. Rev. Leo Frade, Episcopal Bishop of Southeast Florida; Marifeli Perez –Stable, FIU professor of Global and Social Cultural Studies; Dagoberto Valdés, Catholic intellectual and the editor and founder of Vitral and Convivencia magazines in Pinar del Río, Cuba; and Carlos Saladrigas Chairman of the Cuba Study Group.

The conference will be conducted in English and Spanish, and is free and open to the public. Free parking is also available for attendees in the garage.

MDC continues to provide a platform for thought-provoking discussions. The College has recently hosted various international forums on current, regional challenges including the threats against freedom of the press in Latin America, the challenge of preventing widespread genocide, and a series of invited speakers to address the current situation in Cuba with renown dissidents such as blogger/independent journalist Yoani Sanchez, three members of the Ladies in White, and Cuban Catholic priest Father Jose Conrado.
