Miami, October 22, 2013 - Miami Dade College’s(MDC) Arts and Philosophy Department will continue its successful jazz series, Jazz at Wolfson Presents, at 5:40 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 12, featuring Wolfson Jazz Ensembles, directed by Dr. Michael Di Liddo.

Four groups comprise the jazz ensembles at the Wolfson Campus. The Verve Ensemble pays tribute to one of jazz’s premier record labels, one that promoted the careers of Ella Fitzgerald, Stan Getz, and Lester Young. The Horace Silver group takes its name from the legendary pianist and composer of the 1950s and ’60s. The Blue Note group pays tribute to the famed jazz record label of numerous classic and groundbreaking recordings. All of these groups help young jazz musicians develop by presenting a wide range of jazz styles.

The program’s most mature group, the Hard Bop Jazz Ensemble, has included some of South Florida’s finest emerging musicians. The ensemble has performed at major jazz festivals in Switzerland, Italy and the Netherlands. The group is highly decorated, receiving DownBeat magazine awards in 2003 and 2007.

“They are a special group of students,” says Dr. Di Liddo.  “They have worked hard learning their repertoire through intensive listening to important recordings. Additionally, they have analytically looked at various aspects of the music and, at this point, are excited about sharing what they have learned. Their concert will cover a wide range of jazz music that represents many important styles.”

MDC’s Jazz at Wolfson Presents features live performances that run monthly from September through April. The concerts are free and open to the public.
