Miami Dade College’s Jazz at Wolfson Presents Drummer Ignacio Berroa Dec. 4
Famed jazz drummer Ignacio Berroa
Miami, November 22, 2013 -
Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Arts and Philosophy Department is drumming things up with Grammy-nominated Ignacio Berroa, during the ever-popular Jazz at Wolfson Presents at noon, Wednesday, Dec. 4.
Famed jazz drummer Ignacio Berroa’s numerous contributions to American music have earned him a place among a select group of artists known to have set new musical trends for the 20th century.
Berroa moved to New York from Cuba in 1980. A year later, he joined Dizzy Gillespie’s quartet and became the percussionist for each of Gillespie’s most important bands for more than a decade, until his death in 1993. The famed jazz musician defined Berroa as “the only Latin drummer in the world in the history of American music that intimately knows both worlds: his native Afro-Cuban music as well as jazz.”
The Havana native has recorded and played alongside renowned artists such as Chick Corea, Wynton Marsalis, Michael Brecker, and Tito Puente, among others. Berroa’s first album, Codes, on Blue Note Records, was nominated for a Grammy in 2007.
MDC’s Jazz at Wolfson Presents features live performances that run monthly from September through April. The concerts are free and open to the public.
