One Billion Rising for Justice Miami and Rally to Stop Human Trafficking Comes to MDC Feb. 14

Miami, January 15, 2014 - A day of love will become a day of action on Friday, February 14, 2014, from 4 to 7 p.m., when thousands of students, community leaders, celebrities and survivors descend on the Wolfson Campus of Miami Dade College (MDC) to participate in the One Billion Rising campaign to end human trafficking and the abuse of women worldwide. Considered the largest mass action initiative in history, the campaign began as a call to action based on the staggering United Nations statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS.

On Valentine’s Day 2013, people across the world came together to strike, dance, and RISE in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end at last to the violence. Locally, some two thousand men, women and children joined together at Miami Beach’s Soundscape Park with an electrifying common purpose. History will repeat itself this coming Valentine’s Day at MDC, the nation’s largest institution of higher education, which has regularly been the site of important causes and social change. On this date, motorists, bikers, cyclists and walkers will participate in a rolling strike on the streets surrounding the campus and will then gather on the campus’ Kyriakides Plaza for a web strike, music and inspiring words from experts and survivors. It will be a major call to action and everyone is invited.
