Miami, March 12, 2014 -
Miami Dade College’s(MDC) North Campus will present a photo exhibition, The Execution of Troy Davis September 19-21, 2011, by New York photojournalist Scott Langley, through March 14 at the campus’ Lehman Theater. Scott will be present for a special conversation with MDC students and members of the campus community at 10:00 am Friday, March 14.
The photos document the execution of Troy Davis, who was sentenced to death in Georgia for the murder of police officer Mark MacPhail. Davis maintained his innocence from the very beginning, all the way through to his execution.
The exhibition is part of Scott's Death Penalty Photography Documentary Project, which has been displayed throughout the world in recent years. In addition to work as a photographer, Scott has been an active grassroots organizer against the death penalty since 1999. His Death Penalty Photography Documentary
Projectbegan in 1999 as a college class assignment in Texas - artistically capturing what was unavailable to “those of us on the outside". Since then, the project has expanded to include in-depth coverage of death penalty cases across the country.
The Death Penalty Photography Documentary Project consists of thousands of images, making it the largest, most varied known collection of photos about the death penalty in the United States’ modern era. The project highlights Scott Langley's efforts as an independent photojournalist and a human rights activist to bring together the unique combination of art, journalism and education into one powerful project. The exhibition runs through Friday, March 14.
This exhibition is part of the Human Rights Awareness efforts the North Campus has embarked on since its conception in August 2011. The Human Rights Committee at the campus and the Genesis Fund promotes co-curricular programming in a diversity of areas related to social justice and human rights in an effort to increase awareness on the importance of equality and inclusion of all persons.
