Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus’ School of Business Celebrates another Successful Year with its Ongoing VITA Program April 25

Miami, April 3, 2014 - Miami, April 3, 2014 – To celebrate the end of the regular tax season, Miami Dade College’s (MDC) School of Business at the Wolfson Campus will award the student volunteers with IRS certificates and recognize the faculty and tax coordinators for lending their time and expertise during the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) at MDC. The event will take place at 7 p.m., Friday, April 25.

This year marked the 20th anniversary of VITA at MDC. The program offers free tax preparation services to low-income individuals, the elderly and non-English speaking residents.  VITA is administered and staffed by faculty, tax coordinators, and MDC business students who volunteer their time to help the public in preparing their tax forms. Students are trained beforehand and must pass an IRS exam of basic rules, regulations, and tax preparation skills before they assist taxpayers. Divided into three groups, their functions are administrative, tax return preparation, and quality review. The IRS initiated the VITA program decades ago with the hopes of helping those who need specialized attention in preparing their tax forms.

“Our 20th anniversary of providing tax service to the community was strengthened in the 2014 tax season with our partnership with Single Stop at the three main campuses:  Kendall, North and Wolfson,” said Dr. Ana Cruz, chair of the School of Business at the Wolfson Campus. “At the VITA/Single Stop offices, additional services, such as legal assistance and financial counseling, were also offered.”

Student volunteers and family members are welcome to attend the celebration.
