Miami Dade College’s Homestead Campus to Offer Turner School of Construction Management Training Program

Miami, April 9, 2014 - Miami Dade College’s (MDC) School of Continuing Education is partnering with the Turner School of Construction Management to offer a series of training seminars May 6 – July 31 (excluding week of July 1) at MDC’s Homestead Campus. There will be a kick-off reception and opportunity to sign up at 6 p.m. Monday, May 6. Registration is open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. The first class will begin following the reception at 7 p.m.  

The program was designed by Turner to assist disadvantaged, veteran, minority, and women-owned businesses in the best principles and practices in the construction industry. The seminars at the Homestead Campus will be taught by Turner staff and will include topics such as Risk Management, Business Development, Financial Management, Job Planning and Set up, Purchasing, Safety, Workers Compensation, Engineering and Projects Records, Estimating and Pre-construction, Change Order Management, Cost and Budget Control, Effective Negotiations and Blue Print Reading. 

Each graduate of the program will receive a Certificate of Participation and credit for 40 contact hours, which equal 4 continuing education units (CEU) that are valid for two years and can be used toward the renewal of their state contractor’s license. 

Turner’s Construction Management Seminars, implemented in 1969, take place throughout the state of Florida. The Program was designed by Hilton Smith, Turner’s corporate vice-president of community affairs, with the support of Herbert D. Conant, then vice-president and territory general manager in the Cleveland office and later elected chairman of the Turner Corporation. Since its initiation, more than 34,000 students have graduated from this unique program across the U.S. In addition, more than 400 joint ventures and association partnerships have been created nationally. Since 1980, nationwide training is held in 70 cities around the country.
