Miami Dade College Celebrates Shakespeare’s 450th Birthday with Summer Film Festival

Shakespeare L

Miami, May 12, 2014 - Although Miami Dade College (MDC) won’t be blowing out 450 candles to celebrate William Shakespeare’s birthday, it will be hosting a Shakespearean summer film fest to highlight the revered writer’s life and ongoing influence. Shakespeare and Snacks: Summer Film Festival will run every Wednesday at noon May 21 through July 16, in Room R8401 at MDC’s Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami.

In conjunction with the MDC Learning Resources department, the Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor, and the Board of County Commissioners, MDC will be screening the movie adaptations of some of the Bard’s greatest plays, supplemented with A Shot of Shakespeare - short clips featuring historic videos reflecting the influence of Shakespeare’s life, works, and times on South Florida.

Selected from the millions of feet of film and thousands of hours of video tape, A Shot of Shakespeare will showcase only-in-Miami stories ranging from all-star productions of classic plays to auditions by dogs ready to roll over and play Shakespeare.

Below is a list of the scheduled films

05/21 – A Midsummer Night’s Dream

05/28 – Coriolanus

06/04 – Hamlet

06/11 – Much Ado about Nothing

Housed on MDC’s Wolfson Campus, the Wolfson Archives’ collections span nearly a century, with the earliest materials dating from the 1910s.
