Good Grief! Miami Dade College Welcomes Charlie Brown to its North Campus

Charlie Brown L

Miami, July 17, 2014 - One of the most-recognized comic-strip characters and beloved American folkloric icons, good ole Charlie Brown, will come alive at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus with the performance of the classic Broadway musical You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. The free shows are open to the public and will take place Wednesday, July 30, and Thursday, July 31, at the North Campus Studio Theater.

This 1967 musical comedy - based on the characters created by cartoonist Charles M. Schulz in his comic strip Peanuts – will come to life with music and lyrics by Clark Gesner. Delivered in two acts, the show follows a typical day in the life of Charlie Brown and his dog, Snoopy. The rest of the gang – including Patty, Shroeder, Linus, and Lucy – also make an appearance and share their observations, largely negative, of Charlie Brown. As the play progresses, the characters’ relationships with one another are further expanded. In the end, Charlie Brown’s biggest tormentor, Lucy, befriends the protagonist who, in the last scene, is left smiling on stage.

The musical will be directed by Professor Janet Raskin, with music direction by Professor Karen Nagy. Performers are an ensemble cast of North Campus theatre and music students who will entertain the audience through a delightful series of short scenes representing the average, sometimes anxious, always wondrous everyday life of children.

Because of its small cast and simple staging, You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown is a favorite production of community theatres across the country and a popular choice for amateur theatre productions. As such, this family-oriented show will not only spark the curiosity and imagination of children, but will reach a broader audience by encapsulating children's issues and timeless innocence as a metaphor for adults.
