Miami Book Fair International Offers Mix of Literary Talent With Popular Evenings Series and Various Author Presentations Nov. 8-13
Miami Book Fair International (Fair) will again treat book lovers to a week of cultural and educational activities, including a bevy of author presentations beginning Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009 at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Wolfson Campus. The author presentations will begin with award-winning poet, essayist and scholar Elizabeth Alexander at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8. Alexander is best known for writing and delivering President Barack Obama’s inaugural poem, Praise Song for the Day. She is the author of five poetry collections, most recently American Sublime (2005), a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in poetry, and is currently a professor of African American Studies at Yale University.

2009 Miami Book Fair International Staying Green!
For many years, Miami Book Fair International, at Miami Dade College (MDC), has featured top environmental authors and thinkers and promoted “green” causes well before they ever became popular. Last year, for its 25th edition, Fair organizers truly championed “green” issues and activities in most aspects of the event. This year, that trend continues. Environmental issues will be promoted in many ways from author presentations to “green” activities to making “green” choices in Fair logistics.

Miami International Film Festival and Diesel present First Annual Online Shorts Competition

Guinness World Records™ Record-Breaking Attempt Underway at Miami Dade College
With music, poetry and inspirational words, six women began a 10-day reading marathon today at Miami Dade College in an attempt to break a Guinness World Records™ record while promoting education, understanding and respect for human rights. MDC Receives Major Grant to Address Rising Costs of Textbooks by Implementing Trailblazing Program
In addition to tuition, paying for textbooks is usually at the top of the list of concerns for college students. Their cost has grown significantly in recent years. However, now, Miami Dade College (MDC) has received a $267,298 Student Access Via Exchange (S.A.V.E.) grant that will improve students’ access to textbooks and expand their service learning and entrepreneurial skills.

MDC Students and Community to Participate in National Day of Writing

MDC Once Again Named Among Nation’s Top 25 ‘Best Neighbor’ Colleges and Universities
Dr. Even S. Dobelle, president of Westfield State College, who this week announced the nation’s top 25 “Best Neighbor” colleges and universities, which is part of his “Saviors of Our Cities: Survey of Best College and University Civic Partnerships” project. Miami Dade College was honored for a second time and is the only Florida institution and only community college in the nation to make the list.

MDC Hosts First Lady and Florida Campus Compact Awards Gala at the Freedom Tower
The First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, greeted a packed audience at the Freedom Tower this past Thursday during the 2009 Florida Campus Compact Awards Gala and Luncheon hosted by Miami Dade College (MDC). Hundreds of dignitaries from across the state, college and university presidents, media, faculty, staff and students were on hand to listen to Mrs. Obama’s views on community service. The awards ceremony recognized students, faculty and higher education institutions that have made outstanding contributions through service-learning and engaged scholarship projects within the past year.

Miami Dade College Urges Students to Register Early for Spring Term
Miami Dade College’s (MDC) leadership is again urging students to register early for the 2010 spring term. Registration opens Monday, Oct. 12, 2009. The surge in enrollment and budget cuts have impacted the registration process. Last fall, many students were unable to register for certain classes; some were totally unable to register, because the College was not able to add more class sections due to budget cuts.

Miami Dade College Offers Auctioneer License Exam Preparation Course
An auctioneer’s chant requires a special technique as does the ability to conduct auctions for just about any type of item, from E-Bay to a livestock auction. An 80-hour course now offered at Miami Dade College (MDC) will teach these skills and prepare students for the state license exam. Scheduled for October 19 through October 30, 2009, the Auctioneer License Exam Preparation course will be held at the Kendall Campus, 11011 S.W. 104th Street, on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The course is one of several being offered by the College’s Workforce and Professional Training Program within its renowned School of Community Education.

Miami Dade College President Named to Advisory Commission of the National Museum of the American Latino
During his four decade career in higher education, Miami Dade College (MDC) President Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón has served on numerous important national boards, including those he was appointed to by four U.S. Presidents, championing greater access and quality in higher education and placing MDC in the national spotlight. Now, he’s been appointed to the Advisory Commission of the National Museum of the American Latino. Retired U.S. Senator Mel Martinez recommended Dr. Padrón for appointment to this Commission and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell made it one of his appointments. Dr. Padrón joins music mogul Emilio Estefan and other important leaders on the Commission.

November has become a time of celebration at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Kendall Campus through education, art and music. Emerging from the overwhelming success of the campus’ 40th anniversary celebration in 2007, Fall Fest is quickly becoming a beloved event for the entire community. This year, it will take place from Nov. 17 – 21. The Kendall Campus is located at 11011 S.W. 104th St. For this third edition, the campus is coordinating more than half a dozen high quality cultural and entertainment events.

MDC Professor Tony Chirinos Wins Prestigious Camera Club of New York Award
Professor Chirinos recently won first place at The Camera Club of New York’s (CCNY) 2009 National Juried Competition. The CCNY, established in 1884, is the oldest camera club in the country and among the most respected.

Miami Dade College Assists Local Charity Effort in Collecting Shoes for Disadvantaged Residents in Haiti and Jamaica
A partnership between Miami Dade College (MDC) students and healthcare workers at Coconut Grove’s Sister Emmanuel Hospital has been established to provide adequate shoes for disadvantaged residents living in Haiti and Jamaica. The donation drive, “These Boots Are Made For Walking” will accept used and new shoes at several MDC campuses until Oct. 7, 2009.

MDC Selected to Receive National Grant to Train Future Caregivers
At a recent MDC Board of Trustees meeting, Carlos F. Suarez “CFP,” a managing partner for New England Financial agency in Miami, presented a grant check for $20,000 on behalf of MetLife Foundation. The grant will be used to launch the Elder Caregiver Educational Institute in spring 2010 at MDC’s North Campus.

Miami International Film Festival & Centro Cultural Español to Host ‘Festival of New Spanish Cinema’ Weeklong Screenings October 6
Continuing its tradition of bringing the best of world cinema to South Florida, The Miami International Film Festival (MIFF), Miami Dade College (MDC) and Centro Cultural Español (CCE)-Miami, will host the Festival of New Spanish Cinema, an eclectic collection of Spanish films during a weeklong festival beginning Tuesday, Oct. 6 through Sunday, Oct. 11 at MDC’s Tower Theater in Little Havana. The event will kick-off with a cocktail reception sponsored by Freixenet and the screening of director David Planell The Shame/ La Vergüenza. The Festival of New Spanish Cinema’s visit next month is part of a six-city tour that will culminate in Chicago in November 2009.

Citi Foundation Awards MDC School of Business its Third Grant to Help Strengthen Entrepreneurs and Small Business Owners
Miami Dade College’s (MDC) School of Business has been awarded its third grant in two years from Citi Foundation in the amount of $50,000. This is almost triple the amount first awarded to the College in 2007. This grant will be used to establish the Small Business Education Program: Opportunity for Success, a viable training project for entrepreneurs and small business owners.

Miami Dade College Land Conveyance Act Signed into Law by President Barack Obama
President Barack Obama has signed into law today a bill providing for the conveyance of a parcel of land held by the U.S. Department of Justice Federal Bureau of Prisons, the Miami Dade College (MDC) Land Conveyance Act, H.R.838. It was approved by the U.S. House of Representatives in March and its Senate companion bill, S. 814, introduced by Senator Bill Nelson, met with approval in the United States Senate in July.

Miami Dade College Receives Major Grant from U.S. Department of Education Emergency Management Program
The U.S. Department of Education (DOE) announced on July 9th that Miami Dade College (MDC) was selected to receive a $499,999 grant from the Emergency Management for Higher Education Program. The major grant, which took effect this month, will help the college with its existing and future emergency planning activities. The DOE created the Emergency Management for Higher Education (EMHE) Grant Program in 2008, as a tool to fund new or existing higher education institution projects and fully integrate campus-based emergency planning efforts.

Former MDC Student Dances His Way into National Spotlight on Televised Hit Show
After auditioning last year for a coveted spot on Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD),” Brandon Bryant was eliminated just before making it to the Top 20 round – it was his second attempt. Undeterred, the former Miami Dade College (MDC) dance major joined a professional dance troupe in Salt Lake City, Utah then auditioned when Season Five auditions were held in the western U.S. city earlier this year.
