Miami Dade College Welcomes New Softball Head Coach
The Miami Dade College (MDC) Department of Athletics has hired Gina De Aguero as head coach of its women’s softball team. An MDC alumna and a former member of the Lady Sharks softball team, De Aguero earned an Associate in Arts degree in Education in 1999 and later transferred to St. Thomas University to complete her Bachelor’s degree in Social Studies in Secondary Education in 2003.

Next spring, from April 29 to May 29, 2012, MDC will offer a dynamic study abroad program titled Economic Awakenings: China. MDC Engineering Student Selected by FAA for Prestigious Job Training Program
Kedar Souffrant, a stellar student in Miami Dade College’s (MDC) renowned School of Engineering and Technology, was recently selected by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for its Technical Operations - Collegiate Training Initiative (TO-CTI) program. The prestigious pipeline program will enable Soufrrant to work part time as a technical operations intern at an FAA facility in Miami for the duration of her studies at MDC. Upon successful completion of the TO-CTI program and graduation, Souffrant will be eligible for a non-competitive, full-time entry level position as a technical specialist with the FAA.

MDC Among 12 Institutions to Receive Portion of U.S. Education Department’s $2.9 Million Grant to Strengthen Minority Participation in STEM-Related Fields
The Department of Natural and Social Sciences at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) InterAmerican Campus (IAC) was recently awarded a Minority Science and Engineering Improvement Program (MSEIP) grant to train minority students, especially women, to earn a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) degree. MDC is among only 12 colleges and universities nationwide to receive the grant, which has a total disbursement of $2.9 million for fiscal 2012. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan made the official announcement earlier this fall, and MDC will begin implementation of the grant in January 2012.

Miami Dade College Awarded Campus Compact Grant to Pilot Program
Miami Dade College (MDC) has been awarded a two-year grant from Campus Compact, a non-profit coalition of nearly 1,200 college and university presidents who are committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education, to launch Connect2Complete (C2C), a peer advocacy initiative to help community college students stay in school and graduate. C2C also aims to increase student civic engagement and leadership in the college and community. MDC is one of only three institutions in the state selected to pilot the Campus Compact-funded project, which is supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The MDC Center for Community Involvement, in partnership with Florida Campus Compact, will launch the project at the Wolfson Campus in the 2012 spring term. MDC is one of nine colleges in the nation selected to participate.

MDC Kendall Campus to Host Take Stock in Children’s Strides for Education 5K Walk/Run

The 28th edition of the Miami Book Fair International (MBFI), presented by Miami Dade College’s (MDC) The Center @ MDC, will kick-off on Sunday, Nov. 13 with live presentations by several of the country’s most celebrated contemporary authors in the black diaspora. A few of the authors, though not of African descent, have written about the black experience in their work, such as Alan Cheuse and Peter Godwin. Others, including award-winning artist and activist Harry Belafonte, as well as noted hip hop historian Nelson George, are African American and have maintained a loyal fan base for many years. During the Fair, the authors will participate in book signings, readings, and one-on-one discussions.

MDC Students Leading the Way in Undergraduate Science Research

MDC Hosts Community Events for Hispanic Heritage Month
Considering Miami Dade College’s (MDC) track record for enrolling more Hispanic students than any other educational institution in the nation, it is no wonder that the month of October would be any less exciting for the students, faculty, staff and community. This month, in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, MDC’s eight campuses will host an exciting array of events including lectures, exhibitions, live performances, food tastings, and more. MDC to Offer New Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education
Miami, Oct. 13, 2011 – Miami Dade College (MDC) will soon offer a new Bachelor of Science with a major in Early Childhood Education (BS-ECE) to meet the local demand for trained Early Childhood Education professionals in South Florida, thanks to unanimous approval from the Florida Board of Education. The college’s renowned School of Education (SOE) will begin offering a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education in fall 2012. This program will be the seventh state-approved teacher education program in the SOE and will offer its graduates professional teacher certification in Birth to Age 4 and Age 3 to Grade 3, with endorsements in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Reading, and Pre-Kindergarten disabilities.

Miami Dade College’s School of Education Baccalaureate Program Ranks Best in State at Improving Student Performance
Recent graduates of Miami Dade College’s (MDC) School of Education’s bachelor degree program have a lot to celebrate following their first year of teaching. According to data released from the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE), MDC’s graduates who spent their first year teaching in Florida public schools saw major increases in their own students’ performance on the FCAT and other standardized tests. In fact, MDC topped the FLDOE report.

Her Majesty Queen Sofia of Spain Visits the Freedom Tower at Miami Dade College
The visit was particularly symbolic and moving as the Freedom Tower is a treasured place for Hispanics in South Florida, particularly the hundreds of thousands of Cuban exiles who were processed in its rooms during the 1960s and early 1970s. It is also a National Historic Landmark constructed in the Spanish Mediterranean Revival style with design elements borrowed from the Giralda Tower in Seville, Spain.
