Miami Dade College (MDC) architecture professor Jose R. Vazquez has found a way to preserve and honor the institution’s architectural heritage from its early years. More than 80 Miami Dade College (MDC) students who work as mentors and volunteers for a variety of charitable causes will receive academic scholarships as a result of an $111,970 federal grant from the Florida Campus Compact (FL/CC) AmeriCorps Program. A Miami Dade College (MDC) fine arts professor has earned the recognition of the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. Veteran educator Alberto Meza’s print work, “Dwarfs Encounter Velazquez’s Mirror” is now part of the museum’s exclusive print collection. The professor’s work was also selected to be featured in Taiwan’s 14th International Biennial Print Exhibition, a highly competitive contest that attracted more than 1,400 artists from 69 countries this year. His work was juried by two sets of international judges and was not only selected as a finalist to be a part of the exhibit but will also be featured in a printmaking educational tour through China.

A tiger shark jaw from Key Largo, bottom sediments from the Antarctic and a whale tooth from Chesapeake Bay. Wherever former Miami Dade College Professor Loren D. Wicks went, he and his wife traveled with a hammer and pick, ready to excavate and collect samples. Wicks passed away in 1987, but many of his archeological treasures can be found today at the Kendall Campus Earth Science Museum and Demonstration Center, better known as “Kendall Rocks.”

The Morris K. Udall and Stewart L. Udall Foundation recently announced Miami Dade College (MDC) civil engineering major Eva B. Sevilla as one of 80 college students nationwide to be named as a 2010 Udall Scholar. Udall scholars were chosen based on their commitment to careers in the environment, health care or tribal public policy; leadership potential; and academic achievement. Sevilla is the first student in MDC’s history to be named a Udall Scholar. The prestigious Udall Scholarship has generated 1,155 Udall Scholars since the first awards in 1996.

Miami Dade College (MDC) baseball coach Steve Hertz has been carrying the torch for MDC’s storied baseball program for 26 years. Miami Dade College (MDC) is continuing its long-standing commitment to help low-income, elderly, and non-English speaking residents complete their 2009 taxes with the “always free” Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA). The VITA program is administered and staffed by faculty and MDC business students who volunteer their time to help the public in preparing their tax forms. Students are trained beforehand and must pass an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) exam of basic rules, regulations, and tax preparation skills before they assist taxpayers. Divided into three groups, their functions are administrative, tax return preparation, and quality review.
