Miami Dade College Students Helping Light the Way with Solar Lanterns for Students in Rural Kenya

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Museum of Art + Design (MOAD) has announced the appointment of five members to the Museum’s inaugural Curatorial Advisory Board. Joining the newly-formed group are Hunter Braithwaite, Maggy Cuesta, Ralph Provisero, Elisa Turner, and Angela Valella. Board members will provide leadership and guidance over the programming of exhibitions and public engagement opportunities, in direct relation Museum’s mission as well as that of its constituents/patrons. Miami Dade College (MDC) recently announced its 2013 Endowed Teaching Chairs, one of the college’s most distinguished and valued traditions. The annual program recognizes outstanding faculty who continuously strive to accomplish MDC’s mission. Seven professors will be honored this year at a reception at 6 p.m., on Monday, Oct. 14, at the Wolfson Campus’ Chapman Conference Center. MDC’s Endowed Teaching Chairs is generously funded by donors through the ongoing work of the MDC Foundation. The honorees are selected by a committee of their peers who reviewed evidence of student retention and success, effective teaching strategies, professional growth, and making student learning a top priority. Each will receive an annual stipend of $7,500 for three years. To date, more than 300 recipients have been inducted in the program since its inception in 1992.

Miami Dade College Business Students Securing Jobs with Local Companies upon Completing Internships

Gabriel Crespo has taken full advantage of his classes at Miami Dade College (MDC), and in his four years of study, has created two companies. This budding entrepreneur, who will soon receive his bachelor’s degree, secured an internship with American Airlines, as part of the BAS-Supervision and Management program. Crespo, a first-generation graduate in his family, is working with the airline’s marketing & sales promotion department, where he represents the company in community affairs, including fund-raising and sponsorship events.

MDC Students Win Competitive Study Abroad Scholarships for Semester in China

Five Miami Dade College (MDC) students are about to take flight to China. As part of the college’s rich study abroad program, the students were awarded scholarships to spend the upcoming fall semester in Jiangsu, China. Sponsored by the Hanban/Confucius Institute headquarters in Beijing, a non-profit organization promoting world-wide Chinese language education and a partner of MDC’s Confucius Institute, the program pays for tuition, living expenses, meals, and local cultural tours in China. From varying disciplines, the students will attend MDC’s sister university in China, Jiangsu Normal University.

MDC Homestead Campus to Collaborate with the Homestead & Florida City Chambers of Commerce to Create Young Entrepreneurs in the Community

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) School of Continuing Education will be participating in a national program geared toward helping local students in grades 6 through 12 learn the process of starting a running a real business. The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) Program, in collaboration with MDC, will give students the opportunity to work closely with local business leaders to cultivate and research business ideas, write a business plan, pitch their plan to a panel of investors, obtain funding, develop their brand, participate in a trade show at the end of the year, and actually launch their enterprise.

Miami Dade College Interns Excel in Year Up Program, Geared to Closing the Opportunity Divide

Five Miami Dade College (MDC) students will trade their swimsuits for school books this summer, as they head north to Massachusetts. The Miami Dade College (MDC) Baseball team has clinched the 2013 Southern Conference Championship. The team is currently ranked No. 2 in the latest FCSAA Region VIII Baseball Poll with a record of 32-6, 16-3 in conference. As of the April 10th NJCAA National Poll, the Sharks rank 11th in the nation. The MDC Baseball team has scored 328 runs, batted in 289 RBI’s, and has.358 batting average.

Miami Dade College, a Long-Time Advocate for Immigration Reform, Urges Other Presidents of Higher Education to Follow Suit

President Eduardo J. Padrón of Miami Dade College (MDC) joined forces with two other major college presidents in drafting an open letter to more than 1,200 university and college presidents, urging their fellow leaders in higher education to join them in pushing for smart immigration policies that will help attract and retain the world’s best and brightest. Padrón and the presidents of Cornell University and Arizona State University stressed the U.S. often trains the most talented foreign-born students in its top educational institutions, only to send them overseas to compete against us in the global marketplace because our immigration system does not provide an opportunity for them to stay. The letter also noted that many children who were brought here at a young age are prevented from attending college because of their undocumented, immigration status.

MDC Museum of Art + Design Presents Arnold Mesches: A Life’s Work

The Miami Dade College (MDC) Museum of Art + Design (MOAD) will present Arnold Mesches: A Life’s Work, a major retrospective-style exhibition spanning 60 years of work by renowned American painter Arnold Mesches. Mesches most comprehensive and inclusive retrospective to date will open with a reception at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the Museum of Art + Design located in MDC’s historic Freedom Tower. There will also be a gallery talk and book signing at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 14. The exhibition, reception and lecture are free and open to the public.
