A Celebration of Literary Excellence

Each November, I look forward to those eight special days when downtown Miami becomes the center of the literary world, as hundreds of thousands of book lovers converge in our city to celebrate some of the most important names in contemporary literature.

The 2007 Miami Book Fair International (MBFI) begins this Sunday, Nov. 4, and continues through Nov. 11, with an exciting selection of readings and discussions from prizewinning, bestselling and emerging authors from around the world.

Hundreds of renowned authors, including Michael Ondaatje, Edwidge Danticat, Nikki Giovanni, Edna Buchanan, Ana Castillo, Amy Stewart, Richard Russo, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, Jenna Bush, Chris Abani, Diane Ackerman, Ralph Nader and Erica Jong, will present their works during the Evenings With...  series and the Festival of Authors.

As in recent years, the 2007 Fair offers the Children's Alley, the International Village, Ibero-American and Caribbean Authors Programs, and the Nov. 9-11 Street Fair. This year, MBFI introduces the Translation Market -- a ground-breaking event on Nov. 8 that will give attendees the opportunity to meet industry professionals, while gaining a deeper sense of the world literature market through the discovery of new international books and writers.

As always, College employees and students may attend all of the Book Fair events free of charge by presenting an MDC ID card. Please remember, however, that advance tickets are required for the 2007 Evenings With...series.

Thanks are due to the staff of the Florida Center for the Literary Arts (FCLA), especially, executive director Alina Interian, Book Fair director Delia Lopez, and the many Book Fair volunteers at the College and throughout the community who make this unparalleled literary event possible.

If you have not already signed up as a Fair volunteer and are interested, please register at: http://www.miamibookfair.com/mbfi/volunteer.htm.

I hope to see you at the Fair.

Thank you,

Eduardo
