Celebrate Kendall Campus' 40th Anniversary

For more than 40 years, Miami Dade College's Kendall Campus has made a world of difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands in Miami-Dade County.

A year after its founding in 1967, the Kendall Campus helped black high school dropouts from disadvantaged families improve their job prospects under the Career College Program. In 1971, the Environmental Center, a program that promotes energy-efficient and environmentally friendly practices, was founded, making the College a leader among environmentally-minded educational institutions.

Throughout the years, the Kendall Campus has remained a symbol of excellence in the community. To commemorate its rich tradition, the College is honoring Kendall's 40th anniversary with a six-day celebration, from Nov. 12, through Saturday, Nov. 17.

The celebration kicked off Monday morning with a sculpture dedication and continues throughout the week with a range of festivities, from a faculty concert series and a carnival to a golf tournament. One of the main highlights of the celebration is a Latin Jazz Festival at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, featuring Arturo Sandoval, Nestor Torres, Ed Calle, Roberto Perera, José Negroni, Edwin Bonilla, Richard Bravo, Gary Keller and many other jazz greats and award-winning musicians. This event is free with a ticket, which may be picked up by visiting the Kendall Campus Student Life Office (Room 100), Community Education Office (Room 3129) or by calling 305-237-2321 or 305-237-2161.

On Saturday, Nov. 17, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Kendall Campus will host a free Children's Carnival, complete with rides and food, and open to the entire community.

The evening will close with a 40th Anniversary Reception and Gala Dinner Dance, featuring the Hal Roland Orchestra. The event begins at 6 p.m. in the Theodore R. Gibson Health Center. Information about tickets is available by calling 305-237-2039.

I hope to see you there and at other events throughout the week, as we join together to celebrate and honor the success of Kendall Campus and our faculty, staff and students.

Special thanks are due to Kendall Campus President Dr. Gregory Gray, to the Kendall Campus 40th Anniversary Committee for organizing this wonderful celebration, to our event volunteers, and to our sponsors GEICO and Navarro Discount Pharmacies.

Happy 40th, Kendall Campus.

Eduardo
