Making History with Learning Outcomes Covenant

With signatures affixed to the MDC Learning Outcomes Covenant, these guidelines for student success became that much more real today. It was a beautiful ceremony, celebrating a special partnership between our students, faculty and support personnel, with support ranging from our Board of Trustees to the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and all the way to the U.S. Department of Education.

While the media coverage is still pouring in, Inside Higher Ed and The Chronicle of Higher Education both recognized the significance of MDC's work.

Inside Higher Ed's, Doug Lederman wrote that MDC's signing of the Learning Outcomes Covenant "shows that faculty members — who played a central role in developing some of the home-grown tests and tools that Miami Dade is using — are willing to engage in the hard work of holding themselves accountable. "

In Elyse Ashburn's Chronicle article on the topic of the national debate on assessment, fueled in part by Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings a year ago, she wrote, "Miami Dade, one of the largest colleges in the country, with about 160,000 students, has the heft to potentially affect the debate about how best to do that."

This has been a moving and proud day for this institution. I send my gratitude to all of you who have contributed to the Learning Outcomes process and the continuing advancement of this vital institution.

Thank you.

Eduardo
