MIFF Unveils 2007 Movie Lineup and Poster

Each year the Miami International Film Festival (MIFF) brings the best of world cinema to South Florida and encourages young filmmakers to explore and discuss the art of film.

As the only major film festival hosted by an institution of higher learning, Miami Dade College is proud to host the 24th annual Festival, from March 2-11.

Yesterday, MIFF announced its selection of films for the 2007 program and unveiled this year's promotional poster, which displays the work of local artist Connie Lloveras. Titled "Firmly Planted," the artwork symbolizes the journey of creation.

The 2007 Festival features 112 films from 43 countries, including Germany, Italy, the U.S., Canada, Egypt and Indonesia. The ever-popular Ibero-American Competition will showcase dramatic features from Brazil, Ecuador, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Spain, Portugal, Colombia, Mexico, and for the first time in the Festival’s history, a film from Bolivia.

The Festival opens with Black Book by award-winning Dutch director Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct, Total Recall), celebrates Awards Night with Ira & Abby by director Robert Cary (Anything But Love) and closes with the World Premiere of El Corazón de la Tierra (The Heart of the Earth) from Spanish director Antonio Cuadri (La Gran Vida, You're My Hero).

A number of special events will take place during the Festival, including a tribute to the career of French producer/director/writer Luc Besson (La Femme Nikita, The Fifth Element); a cinematic celebration of the music of Cuban masters La Lupe and Benny Moré; series of 18 panel discussions with film industry leaders and noted filmmakers, such as Nick Moore, editor of Along Came Polly, Love Actually, and The Full Monty; and of course, our opening and closing-night galas.

Thank you to Nicole Guillemet, festival director; Carol Ann Lafferty, managing director; and all of the MIFF and College staff who work so hard year-round to make this event happen.

I look forward to seeing you at the Festival.

Thank you.

Eduardo
