Taking Steps to Confront Budget Reductions

The full extent of the financial challenge confronting the College has become clear in recent days. As communicated to you previously, MDC's budget reduction now amounts to $9 million. In addition, 3,110 full-time equivalents students (FTE) are unfunded, resulting in $11.3 million in lost revenues.

We need to take steps to counteract these losses. Effective immediately, I am implementing a freeze on hiring and travel. While a process will be in place to review exceptions, please note that requests must be of the most immediate and necessary nature.

The President's Cabinet has explored additional measures and I will keep you informed as other steps are identified. Your suggestions are most welcome as well. Please forward your ideas to the provosts or campus presidents.

Each of us can play a part in meeting this challenge, and as our strategy is clarified in the coming days, a list of actions that each of us can take will be forwarded to you. Working together has always been our great strength. I am confident that we will find the very best approach to maintaining our level of quality.

Thank you.

Eduardo
