A Major Victory in Tallahassee

I am pleased to report that today in Tallahassee the Florida Taxation & Budget Reform Commission approved our proposal for a constitutional amendment that would allow for local support of community colleges. The amendment would allow any community served by a community college to place an optional sales tax referendum on the local ballot to supplement the funding of its community college.

This is a major victory for community colleges and specifically for MDC. The proposed amendment will be on the November ballot statewide. If the amendment passes, it would then be possible to request a local referendum before the voters of Miami-Dade County.

It took the efforts of many people to secure this important first step, and it will take a lot of work statewide to pass the upcoming amendment. We at MDC can play a decisive role. In the weeks ahead I will be providing you with more specific information.
