Student satisfaction with MDC remains high

I am pleased to share the results of the 2008 Enrolled Student Survey, which was administered during the 2008-2009 Fall Term. This biennial survey assesses students’ level of satisfaction with MDC. In spite of financial challenges and increased enrollment, student satisfaction remains high — 92 percent overall — and has increased in most areas.

The survey asks students to rate 19 different services provided by the College. The majority of students who used any given service were satisfied with the service they received. Two services show considerable increases since 2004: Advisement by Student Services and Mentoring. The library, testing offices, bursar’s office, study skills labs, and admission/registration received the highest satisfaction ratings for services that are used by at least 50 percent of the students.

Collegewide student agreement ratings related to employee service and support also rose significantly. Survey participants increasingly reported that MDC employees are respectful, courteous, and friendly; respond in a timely manner; are knowledgeable; and care about students’ progress and success.

This survey also revealed some important changes in students' employment and family income, likely reflecting the current economic times. Collegewide, the proportion living below poverty increased by four percentage points to 39 percent; and the proportion of low-income students also increased by four percentage points to 61 percent. The proportion of our students who work decreased by nine percentage points to 72 percent and the proportion who work full time decreased by 10 percentage points to 20 percent.

I am very happy to see the positive trends in most of the students’ ratings. All of these survey results are being reviewed by Campus and District leadership to acknowledge the hard work that led to the noted improvements and to identify additional opportunities to improve. A complete report of the results may be viewed at: http://webftp2/ir/iremployees/RR2009-02R.pdf.

Thank you to the department of Institutional Research, especially Dr. Joanne Bashford and Luisa Canton, for coordinating and reporting this process, as well as the campus testing departments and participating faculty for administering the surveys.
