Message From the President
Monday, October 18, 2010
Early voting begins today
As our most fundamental democratic privilege, voting is every citizen’s opportunity to contribute to the democratic process and the progress of our country, state and community.
This is a volatile time in our nation’s discourse, with media of every ilk conveying countless opinions. But those views registered in the voting booth are the ones that count. Each of us has the chance to exercise that responsibility.
U.S. Census Bureau reported that 64 percent of voting-age citizens voted in the 2008 election, which was up from the 2000 and 2004 elections. Hopefully, we will match or exceed the 2008 percentage, for democracy is only as good as the value placed upon it by its citizens.
Early voting for the Nov. 2, 2010 election begins today, and I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to avoid potential long lines at the polls. You can choose a convenient option near home or near work.
There are 20 early voting sites throughout Miami-Dade County available during the two week period before Election Day, as listed below. All you need to bring is a current and valid identification that contains your name and photograph and signature. For more information, Miami-Dade voters can visit www.miamidade.gov/elections, read the County's Voter Toolkit or call the Miami-Dade County Elections Department at 3-1-1.
When you vote, you will be asked to select the people who will represent our community, state and nation. You will also find several proposals to permanently change the Florida constitution.
The Miami Herald created a 2010 Voter's Guide that introduces the key candidates and their stance on various issues; and the Collins Center for Public Policy has an excellent overview of several important amendments up for vote. Please take the time to familiarize yourself with the candidates and issues, and to fully participate in the political process.
Thank you.
