MDC and MIFF announce 2010 film festival programming

On March 5 through March 14, cinephiles from around the world will converge in Miami to celebrate the 27th anniversary of the Miami International Film Festival (MIFF), the only major film festival presented and hosted by a college or university.

This year's festival features 115 films from 45 countries, including five world premieres, 22 North American premieres and 14 U.S. premieres. Among the films screening at MIFF 2010 are the dramas City Island, starring Andy Garcia and Julianna Margulies; Please Give, starring Amanda Peet, Catherine Keener and Oliver Platt; documentary films, including the international film festival circuit premiere of The Beatles on Record and the U.S. premiere of Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel. The festival will also feature the critically acclaimed premiere of Sweden’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and several Best Foreign-Language Film Oscar contenders, including: Argentina’s The Secret in Their Eyes and Peru’s The Milk of Sorrow.

Ken Loach’s Looking for Eric, starring world-famous Manchester United football player Eric Cantona, will raise the curtain on Friday, March 5, as the official Opening Night Film; while The Secret in Their Eyes will serve as the official Awards Night Film on Saturday, March 13.

A number of special events and competitions will take place during the festival, including a career achievement tribute to acclaimed German actress and director Margarethe von Trotta (The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum, Sheer Madness, Love and Fear, Rosenstrasse, I Am the Other Woman); a cinematic celebration of The Accordion Kings; the REEL Seminars series of panel discussions and educational seminars with film-industry leaders and noted filmmakers; the inaugural Diesel Online Shorts Competition; the Ibero-American Competition; Cutting the Edge; Cinema 360°; Florida Focus; and our opening- and closing-night galas.

Thank you to all of the MIFF and MDC staff who work so hard year-round to make this event a success.

See you at the movies.
