Message From the President

'What are you doing for others?'

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s words often inspired thoughts about community service and leadership, sometimes with such simple, yet poignant questions as, "What are you doing for others?" As we celebrate Dr. King's birthday on Monday, we are presented with many opportunities to give back to the community.

For the third consecutive year, the College's Center for Community Involvement is partnering with local agencies to offer students, faculty and staff the chance to take part in the MLK Day of Service. Volunteers are needed for projects in conjunction with City Year Miami (Southridge Senior High School), Urban Paradise Guild (Oleta River State Park, North Miami), Service for Peace (Fruit and Spice Park, Homestead) and Hands on Miami (Town Park Village, Overtown). For more information or to volunteer, please contact Jo Anne Zarowny at jzarowny@mdc.edu.

Community service is squarely aligned with Dr. King's vision and the College's mission. However you decide to celebrate the holiday weekend, I hope you will reflect on the importance of civic engagement and take a moment to pay respect to a man who devoted his life to advancing social justice, a man who taught us that each and every one of us can play a role in making our country a better place for all.

Thank you.

Eduardo
