Celebrating Our Country and Our College
Independence Day is designated as a special time to reflect on our nation’s freedom and to celebrate America in all its diversity. This is a time to recognize the dreams of our founders, dreams that are rooted in the deeper meaning of freedom and liberty.
It can be easy to overlook the gift that we enjoy as an independent nation, when so many people around the world are not afforded the same luxuries — civil liberties, the right to justice, the right to an education. I am reminded of a quote I once read from a gentleman who had emigrated to this country from a place where these rights did not exist. He said that it was here, in America, where he first sensed what it meant to be an individual, what it meant to be free and what it meant to have the possibility to make his own choices. While celebrating our nation’s birthday on Monday, let us take a moment to also celebrate the choices both our country and our College offer us.
MDC is a true American institution, a great equalizer in this community, providing opportunities to all who are willing to stay the course, to reap the benefits of higher education. The work that we do every day brings our students closer to the fulfillment of their unique dreams, and to the doors opened by a college degree.
I thank you for your dedication to MDC and wish you, your family and friends, a safe and happy Independence Day.
