Honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Through Service

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. worked for increased opportunity for all Americans, much like we, at Miami Dade College, work daily toward improving the lives of individuals in our community through higher education. As we think about how to celebrate Dr. King's birthday and legacy on Monday, Jan. 16, the College's Center for Community Involvement (CCI) is offering us additional ways to give back to the community.

CCI is once again partnering with local agencies to offer students, faculty and staff the chance to take part in MLK Jr. Day of Service projects on Saturday, Jan. 14 and Monday, Jan. 16. Volunteers are needed for projects in conjunction with Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces and City Year Miami. For more information or to volunteer, please contact Tamica Ramos at tramos@mdc.edu.

However you choose to celebrate the holiday weekend, I hope you will take a moment to reflect on the importance of civic engagement and to pay homage to a man who inspired so many with his vision for greater equality and ability to bring people together to create positive social change. In this time of economic challenge for the nation, Dr. King's vision of service to others is more critical than ever.

Thank you for all that you do to expand opportunity to all members of our community.

Eduardo
