School Profile
School for Advanced Studies (SAS) is a full time dual-enrollment high school initiated in the 1988-89 school year as a combined effort of Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) and Miami-Dade College (MDC). Students attending SAS complete their last two years of high school while attending MDC and in many cases simultaneously graduate with both a high school diploma and an Associate of Arts degree from MDC. The school, fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, is located on four campuses of MDC; Homestead, Kendall, North, and Wolfson.
Tenth grade students with an unweighted high school grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 are invited to apply and may be admitted for the eleventh grade upon passing the Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (PERT) administered by MDC. Student selection is based solely on the order in which applicants meet the criteria until we reach capacity. Students apply from all senior high schools in the district and numerous private and parochial schools. Additionally, many home-schooled students choose SAS to complete their secondary studies and begin their transition to college.
Students receive free tuition and fees, free textbooks, and, if eligible, school bus and metro-rail transportation funded by MDCPS. Each semester, students enroll in a minimum of three (3) college dual-enrollment courses, taught by MDC faculty, and four (4) high school courses, taught by SAS faculty. All high school courses are Advanced Placement courses except for Pre-Calculus and Research. The SAS population consists of 500 students; 100 at the Homestead Campus, 200 at the Kendall Campus, 100 at the North Campus, and 100 at the Wolfson Campus.
The opportunity for acceleration and enrichment attracts motivated and academically talented students who wish to advance their studies. One hundred (100%) of our students graduate and continue their academic studies at top colleges and universities in Florida, throughout the nation, or at foreign universities.
The school population reflects the religious, ethnic, and cultural diversity of the community. The school prides itself on a family-like environment, small school setting, and focus on quality education. The small high school environment affords the opportunity for individual student tutoring, counseling, and mentoring by faculty and staff. Students and faculty are supported by parental and community involvement. School for Advanced Studies provides a unique transition between secondary and post-secondary education.
