SAS Black History and Culture Brain Bowl teams place First and Third in South Florida competition
Miami, January 19, 2013 - On January 19, School for Advanced Studies (SAS) Kendall Campus Alpha Team took 1st Place at the 2013 Black History and Culture Regional Brain Bowl Competition. The competition was sponsored by FIU’s Pre-College Program and was held at FIU Biscayne Bay Campus. This event involved teams from many of the high schools in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. Dr. Derrick Johnson, who sponsors this activity for SAS, was proud that in addition to the top performance of its Alpha Team, his SAS Omega Team came in 3rd Place.
The Brain Bowl is designed to “motivate students to improve critical analysis skills in African American history and culture by reading college level written works and trivia.” The SAS Alpha Team will now advance to the state competition which will be held on March 21-22, 2013 in Orlando, Florida. If they place in the top three teams at the state level, then they will have a chance to receive a full scholarship to a Florida public college.
