Miami, February 27, 2014 - School for Advanced Studies (SAS) Senior Christy Charnel was recognized as a "Shining Scholar" at the February 19, 2014 meeting of the Board of County Commissioners for Miami-Dade County. Christy was honored as the "Pursuer of Excellence" for her work in the community and her outstanding academic record.

Christy founded the Loving Bonds Foundation, which aims to bring children of all socioeconomic backgrounds together to foster healing. In her foundation, Christy uses music, counseling and mentorship to foster love and non-violence with children in the community.

Christy has also volunteered hundreds of hours a "His House Children's Home" in an effort to break the cycle of abuse, while meeting the emotional, medical, educational, and social needs of the child. His House is a non-profit faith based organization serving South Florida.
