Ms. Hernandez goes to Washington
Miami, August 1, 2012 - School for Advanced Studies Kendall senior Krystal Hernandez was one of only 40 high school students in the United States to be selected by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) in Washington, D.C. to participate in the CHCI Latino Leaders program. This weeklong experience was created by CHCI so that young Hispanics could learn more about government and policy at the national level and prepare them to become the leaders of tomorrow.
Krystal was flown up to the nation's capital for an all expense paid trip that included meetings with Senator Marco Rubio, Secretary of Education Arnie Duncan and Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. One of the highlights of the trip was the tour of the White House and Krystal was thrilled to share the elevator in the Capitol Building with Vice President Joe Biden. Unfortunately, he was on his cell phone during the elevator ride and could not discuss policy with her.
Krystal was especially grateful for the opportunity to make friends with other top high school students from all around the country. Each of the 40 students were given a $300 gift card at Macy's that helped them to dress in their finest wardrobe when they met with Congressional leaders.
