SAS June, 2017 Intern of the Month - David Overholt

David Overholt with mentor Lisa Colsky

Miami, April 1, 2017 - David Overholt is the SAS Intern of the Month for June, 2017. The adjacent photo pictures David with his mentor at Baptist Hospital Lisa Colsky. Lisa works in the Respiratory Therapy Department at Baptist Health and she said that the time that David spent in her department was not only beneficial to David, but her entire department appreciated David's pleasant demeanor. Lisa said that David brought a calming presence every time he visited. She was extremely impressed by David's professionalism and maturity and would hope that future interns would bring the same kind of overall general niceness that David possesses.

David was primarily involved as an observer in his visits to Baptist twice a week for 5 hours a week. He gained a genuine exposure to life in a hospital environment, ranging from slow and casual days to intense and unpredictable situations that may occur at any moment. The program rotated David through different departments at the hospital including respiratory, focusing on breathing treatments and aspects throughout the hospital, and medical surgical nursing, specializing in recovery care after surgery. In respiratory, David was able to observe the duties of respiratory therapists, usually consisting of performing oxygen treatments, offering smoking cessation programs, and managing a ventilator in a patient transport. David even was afforded the opportunity to observe a cardiac catheterization surgery while observing the respiratory therapist as they were maintaining ventilator and oxygen saturation levels for the patient. David says that this experience cemented his passion and desire to pursue a medical career, starting with aspiring toward a pre-medical path and chemistry major at the University of Florida starting this fall.
