Miami, April 5, 2013 - Jenny Poon, Hannah Leyton, Olivia Sanchez, and Silvia Marmol, representing the School for Advanced Studies (SAS) Kendall Campus, formed the winning team at the 2013 Miami Brain Jeopardy! competition held on Saturday, March 23 at the Miami Science Museum. The First Place "Brain Troopers" team from SAS Kendall was followed by the "Sharks" from SAS Homestead comprised of Robert Saylor, Camilo Guevara, Mohamed Yousif and Daniel Quintero. Third Place went to a team from the ISPA high school in Pinecrest.
The annual Brain Fair is organized by Dr. Coleen Atkins at the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and is co-sponsored by the Society for Neuroscience, and many other organizations and educational institutes across South Florida. This is the first year that included the high school team competition among the many other educational activities about the nervous system, which drew over 3000 patrons to the museum.
One of the Brain Jeopardy! cofounders, Dr. Anthony A. Oliva, congratulated the SAS Kendall team for what he called "an absolutely dominating and gutsy performance that was fantastic". Dr. Oliva and cofounder Dr. Bob Dollinger (Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, Florida International University) plan to visit SAS Kendall in the near future to make a trophy presentation to the "Brain Troopers".
