The Pursuer of Excellence - Waleskis Giraud

School For Advances Studies- South, 12th grade
Commissioner Juan C. Zapata, District 11

Waleskis earned a 5.81 GPA prior to her senior year. As part of the School for Advances Students, she will graduate with an Associate in Arts degree from Miami College in May of 2015 before graduating from high school in June of 2015.

Waleskis immigrated to the United States from Venezuela at the age of four. She is the High School Coordinator of the Miami-Dade County Chapter of Students Working for Equal Rights. As the coordinator, she has spoken to many groups of high schools students about the plight of undocumented students in our community. One of the important aspects of her work with this organization is the time she devotes to working with attorneys to help “Dreamers” apply to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals to avoid deportation and obtain two year work permits. She has logged over 2000 hours working on this important cause over the last two years. She has also served as the Media Lead for Education Not Deportation and is a member of her school’s Mock Trial team.

Waleskis hopes to major in Political Science in college and later pursue a law degree in order to serve her community as an Immigration Attorney and, later, a U.S. Congresswoman.
