Sofia Santa-Cruz of SAS Kendall is the Mayor's Shining Scholar for September

Sofia Santa-Cruz

Miami, September 16, 2013 - School for Advanced Studies junior Sofia Santa-Cruz was selected for the September Shining Scholars' Emerging Leader Award. Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez initiated this program to recognize students who inspire positive change in others and the community. She was recognized at the Board of County Commissioners meeting on Wednesday, September 4.

Sofia is a volunteer at Deering Estates and is Vice President of the Girl Scouts of America Venturing Crew. She recently attended the National Leadership Student Conference for Law in Washington D.C., where she participated in team building opportunities.

Sofia has learned that, even with careful planning, things do go wrong and strength of character comes from how you deal with those obstacles, and that she can be a good leader with the right attitude. She has earned the respect of her friends, advisors, co-volunteers, and camp staff, as well as the kids that she works with every day.

She is currently working towards the President’s Volunteer Service Award and the Congressional Award. She is also working on a two year training program for an 8k obstacle run.
