About Us

At Miami Dade College, we believe in giving back to the community. This is made possible through initiatives such as the Small Business Program which helps businesses gain a competitive edge through the workshops/seminars provided.


Dr. Ana M. Cruz, DBA, CPA, Professor and Chairperson, School of Business, Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus.  Dr. Cruz is responsible for crafting the Small Business Education Program in 2007. Throughout the years she has been involved in the development and expansion of the Program. Her leadership and commitment have contributed to its success and have warranted the continued financial support of Citi Foundation.

Prior to joining Miami Dade College, Dr. Cruz worked in several levels of management in the private industry and the Internal Revenue Service where she was Field Auditor.  Among her diplomas and certifications:  A.A. Degree from Miami Dade College,  B.S. from Florida International University, a Master's in Business Administration from St. Thomas Villanova University, and a Doctorate in Business Administration from Nova Southeastern University, in addition she is a Certified Public Accountant.  She is active in various important committees, such as:  the Beacon Council's Finance and Banking Sub-committee, and the South Florida Regional Council of the Hispanic Business Initiative Fund of Florida, South Florida.

Josie Lorenzo has served as Manager, Small Business Education Program since 2010. 
A 25-year veteran from the corporate sector, her professional experience spans across several areas to include, sales, marketing, development, corporate event planning, and community relations, gained while holding various management positions at Eastern Air Lines, United Airlines, and American Airlines until 2001.  Her knowledge of the local community has been enhanced by serving on numerous non-profit boards during that period.

Ms. Lorenzo has been consultant for several organizations including: The Donors Forum, English + One committee (GMCC), One Community One Goal (MDCPS), the International Ballet Festival of Miami, Miami Book Fair International, and the School of Business at Miami Dade College.  Ms. Lorenzo lived in Sevilla (Spain) where she attended the Facultad de Filosofia y Letras, and obtained a B.A. Degree from Florida International University, majoring in Modern Languages.

Steve Colyer, MBA, holds a Master's degree in Business from the University of South Carolina, and a Certificate in International Business from Seton Hall University (NJ), he has over 25 years of international sales, marketing, and management experience, information technology, and agri-business. 

Mr. Colyer has worked in both, multinational and small business environments.  He has also served as faculty member within the School of Business at the Miami Dade College, North Campus, and has worked with non-profits winning more than a half million dollars in grants. 

Starting his career in sales with computer provider NCR Corporation, he joined AT&T’s marketing organization, working with AT&T and its spin-offs: Lucent Technologies and Avaya Communications; he served as Caribbean/Latin America Region Marketing Director for Lucent Technologies Business Communication Systems and Avaya Communications. He joined the Small Business Education Program/Grow Miami Initiative in 2014 as Manager bringing a wealth of knowledge and valuable experience to the program.  In addition to his work with the Small Business Education Program, Mr. Colyer is also serving as a consultant to The Idea Center at Miami Dade College, aiding in the development of an academic program in business entrepreneurship.
