COMPASS/ESL
The COMPASS/ESL is used for placement at Miami Dade College for students without sufficient English proficiency to take the CPT/PERT. The test will assess students’ ability in three areas—Listening, Reading, and Grammar/Usage, and help place them in the appropriate EAP courses. The test is computer-delivered and untimed, so you may work at your own pace. Doing well is important if you want to be placed in higher-level courses, so you should take your time when taking the test and also prepare beforehand. This site will assist you in preparing for your test.
Purpose and Importance: To accurately place you in the appropriate courses and to improve your opportunity for learning. To minimize the chance that you will have to repeat subjects already mastered. To reduce the possibility of you entering in courses for which you are inadequately prepared.
Note: The EPT is only administered to students with documented disabilities who request special accommodations and replaces COMPASS/ESL.
The COMPASS/ESL is used for the following:
Retest Procedure:
COMPASS/ESL scores are valid for one year. If a student does not use these scores for course placement during that time, the student will be required to take the test again. Students may retest once on COMPASS/ESL for initial placement. Retesting of the complete battery of tests must occur prior to enrollment or by the 100% refund date each semester. Students who have already begun EAP instruction may only be referred for retesting on an individual basis by the department chairperson. Scores are no longer valid for placement after the one-year period; therefore, students may retake the test.
