Marcus and The Amazons is the story of two ant colonies—the Formicas and Amazons—that are at war with each other. The Amazons take the Formica Queen-to-be hostage and challenge Marcus, who is her lover, to rescue her from the grasp of their army. Marcus, a pacifist, has to overcome the obstacles set before him and save his beloved princess without succumbing to the pugnacious nature of the Amazons.
Throughout the story, Philp conveys a message of battling oppression.
