The Medical Center Campus will offer a service learning project in Jamaica to complement Dental Hygiene and Opticianry Program competencies. This immersion option will add an international service learning experience for students that will enhance their clinical and community health studies. Students will develop a hands-on appreciation for health diversity and the need for cultural sensitivity as outlined in the objectives for Healthy People 2010. Through reflection activities, during the experience and immediately following the trip, students will strengthen their cultural awareness. Upon their return, they will engage fellow students so they, too, can learn from these experiences. This cultural competence and immersion experience will be offered May 4, '09 through May 9, '09 in Mandeville, Jamaica. Almost 15% of Jamaica’s population is living below the poverty level in largely rural communities. Students will deliver direct patient care to populations in these rural communities where healthcare is not readily available and is typically sought only for emergencies. With one-third of the population under the age of 14, the greatest need is for accessible, preventive healthcare. The students will visit the parishes, orphanages and clinics for six hours each day to provide dental health care and vision screenings for children. The screenings will consist of an overall health history and oral and visual assessments. Culturally-sensitive dental health and vision care education will be provided as well as dental cleanings, fluoride treatments and eyewear as needed. Each student will keep a personal journal to serve as record of the student’s experiences and learning. A total of twenty students will participate in the program. The cost of the 2009 Dental Hygiene and Vision Care Mission will be approximately $1100.00 per person, including round-trip economy class airfare from Miami, ground transportation and room and board.
