Project MAS: Maximizing Access & Space

 A Title V Grant

What is Project MAS?

Project MÁS is a five year grant, funded by the United States Department of Education Title V Hispanic-Serving Institutions Program, being implemented at the Medical Center Campus of Miami Dade College. 
 

This grant began October 2002 and is in its last year. More faculty have joined the project to learn how to enhance their courses and improve student outcomes.

 

Project MAS was created to:

  • Increase and enhance the educational resources which the campus provides to the students, by remodeling the library, expanding student-dedicated space, and extending library hours.
  • Identify a cohort of 330 first year students each year from the five targeted associate degree programs to pilot test use of improved and expanded educational resources and curricular modifications.
  • Increase the number of faculty benefiting from faculty development component.

 

 

Accomplishments

 

The library has been renovated and remodeled to expand student dedicated quiet space and to provide better work areas for library and media staff. In addition, library hours have been extended.                                            

                                                                                                                                         

 

A total of four technology-equipped group study rooms were created for comfortable student group study.                    

 

A quiet area with 24 carrels were created to provide students with a quiet and comfortable studying environment.

Project MÁS faculty members have received and/or are receiving training and support in the use of instructional technology to promote student learning.

Faculty have attended workshops on test construction and on competencies assessed with licensing exams.

Project MÁS faculty members developed online components to support the use of instructional technology, and licensing exams competencies for students.

Project MÁS faculty members received tablet computers to enhance their instructional technology methods.

To enhance library services, 4 Plasma TVs, 4 Computer stations, 15 laptops, and wireless connectivity was purchased.

The School of Nursing in conjunction with Title V, Project MÁS developed the Online Licensed Practical Nurse to Registered Nurse Program.

 

Tablet and laptops computers were purchased for Project MÁS students.

To promote higher academic achievement and higher licensure pass rates for students in the targeted degree programs, 3 patient simulators were purchased.

 

Over 200 students participated in Project MÁS study skills workshops.

Online Nursing faculty facilitated technology workshops.

Project MÁS students received access to internet based practice licensure examinations.
