EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN

This Applied Technology Diploma program is a three course, one semester program which prepares students to function in the hospital and pre-hospital environment. Graduates of the program can perform clinical data collection, patient assessment, and provide immediate care and safe relocation of the acutely ill. Satisfactory completion of the program will qualify the graduate to sit for the state and/or National EMT Certification Examination. The program is approved by the State of Florida, Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services.

MEDICAL ASSISTING

This program prepares individuals to assist a physician in both business aspects and clinical functions of a medical office. Business functions include receptionist duties, insurance, medical records, bookkeeping and use of business office equipment. Clinical aspects include preparation of the patient for examination ,assessing vital signs, assisting with examination and treatment, administration of medications, basic laboratory procedures, and use of medical diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. The Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) is required.

MEDICAL CODER/BILLER

This Applied Technology Diploma program prepares individuals for employment as coder/billers. The student will learn to translate diagnoses and procedures into numerical designation (coding) using the international classification of diseases (ICD-9-CM) and current procedural terminology (CPT-4). The program involves coding, classifying, and indexing diagnoses and procedures for purposes of standardization, retrieval, and statistical analysis. The student will also be trained to prepare and file medical insurance claim forms for reimbursement. Electronic claims transmission is included. There is special emphasis on ethical and legal responsibilities, data quality, financial reimbursement, diagnosis related groups (DRG’s) and ambulatory patient classification (APCs). The Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) is required.

MEDICAL RECORD TRANSCRIPTIONIST

This Applied Technology Program prepares individuals to transcribe medical records from physicians or other healthcare professionals recorded dictation. The transcriptionist prepares and types reports in appropriate format for the use of health facilities, physicians, insurance companies, legal proceedings and research specialists. Students also learn how to establish a home-based transcription business. The Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) is required.

PHARMACY TECHNICIAN

This program prepares individuals for employment as pharmacy technicians. Pharmacy technicians assist and support licensed pharmacists in providing health care and medications to patients. Pharmacy technicians work in hospital pharmacies, retail pharmacies, home health care pharmacies, nursing home pharmacies, clinic pharmacies, nuclear medicine pharmacies, and in mail order prescription pharmacies. Currently, hospital, home health care, and retail pharmacies hire the majority of pharmacy technicians. The Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) is required.

PHLEBOTOMY

This program is designed to prepare students for employment in a hospital laboratory, blood bank center, or other healthcare facility to collect blood by venipuncture and capillary puncture. Phlebotomists draw blood from patients or donors for diagnostic testing or other medical purposes. Students are taught safe and efficient work practices in obtaining adequate and correct blood specimens, collection of timed specimens, labeling, and transportation of specimens correctly and in a timely manner to the appropriate laboratory sections. The Center for Disease

Control(CDC) guidelines for HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B, and OSHA regulations are emphasized. The Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) is required.

PRACTICAL NURSE

Practical nurses are important members of the healthcare team. They care for the ill, injured or infirm, promote wellness, maintain health and prevent illness under the direction of a registered nurse, licensed physician or licensed dentist. Practical nurses work in hospitals, skilled nursing and long term-term care facilities, offices, clinics, home health and other healthcare settings. Graduates earn a Vocational Credit Certificate in Practical Nursing and are eligible to apply to write the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) to become Licensed Practical Nurses. The program is approved by the Florida State Board of Nursing. The Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) and the Nurse Entrance Test (NET) are required.
