The minutes of October 23, 2000 were approved as presented. Once the minutes are approved, they are posted on the Medical Center Campus Website; however, the minutes will continue to be e-mailed to Campus CASSC members every month. The Campus CASSC minutes will have a separate button on the Medical Center Campus home page. Pedro Chavez is in the process of adding the separate button to make the minutes easier to access.
Ellyn Biggs stated that the CT&D lab would be open more hours. The lab will be open 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. the week of finals. There will be technical staff available to aid faculty in entering students’ grades. Some of the workshops will be offered on days other than Mondays. This will increase the amount of time Ellen will be on the Medical Center Campus.
The new adjunct faculty orientation is Tuesday, December 12, 2000 from 5:00 p.m to 9:00 p.m. in room 2304. The new full time faculty orientation is on Friday, January 19, 2001.
Carol Petrozella provided details regarding the training sessions for faculty currently being offered on the Human Patient Simulator. Dr. Petrozella announced that the FIU graduate cluster would remain in Broward at the Tower. Monday, January 8, 2001 is the CT&D open house from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The CT&D staff is looking for individuals to do presentations at the open house.
Clinical Teaching Strategies will be offered in the Spring Term. C T & D is working on a Master Teacher Seminar.
Dixie Lemons distributed a handout that outlines the new testing hours and the various tests available on both a walk-in basis or appointment only basis. Ms. Lemons explained that 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. are the times the last tests are administered, not the times that testing closes. Students will be able to access Success Center applications in the new area when the Testing area is not in use. Multiple security systems make testing applications inaccessible to unauthorized personnel. An open house is being planned to celebrate the opening of the new Testing Center.
The Testing Center does not have adequate personnel to administer make-up exams for faculty. If faculty do need a quiet environment to proctor make-up exams, the Testing Center can be scheduled.
Susan Kah reported that the change in the natural science requirement for the AA passed the College CASSC. Students will now be required to select one science from the life science area and one science from the physical science area. This change may require some restructuring in the science areas before the Fall Term, 2001-1.
Any curriculum changes must be through the CASSC process by February or March in order to implement the change for Fall Term.
The implementation of the Summer A and B class schedule on the Medical Center Campus was discussed. Pam Singer suggested that the College consider five day a week classes for courses taught in six weeks. This way the students and faculty would not have to endure such long class times at one meeting.
Susan Kah announced that most of the College CASSC committees have met. Medical Center Campus has several individuals serving on the various committees. A workshop for CASSC committee chairs will be held. Pat Stephenson reviewed the goals of College CASSC.
The recommendations and changes have been made to the Histotechnology Program and the Veterinary Technology Program. Members from the campus will be attending the various Campus CASSC meetings on Tuesday, November 28th to discuss both of the new programs and the proposed curriculums. Both programs have admitted students for the Spring Term, 2000-2. Once approved, the courses for Spring Term will be put up as experimental until the changes can be made to convert to the state numbering system sometime in the middle of the Spring Term.
Alana Velazquez was introduced as the new faculty member in the Veterinary Technology Program. She attended Maimi-Dade Community College and graduated from the University of Florida Veterinary Program. She has been in practice in Palm Beach. Ms. Velazquez explained that all of the clinical sites would be off campus.
Susan Kah distributed the revised program curriculum for the Hospitality Management Program reflecting changes that are in compliance with the state and M-DCC’s general education requirements.
Arcie Ewell discussed the new organization in Student Services. Ms. Ewell will provide a copy of the organizational chart at a later date. The changes were recommended two years ago but due to budget constraints had been on hold. As of last spring, there is a college wide financial aid director, James McMillan at North Campus, and a college wide registrar, Tom Stewart at Kendall Campus. A college wide director of career and job placement is still on hold. Eight new positions in student services were posted in November and will be announced the week of November 27th. All of the positions are at the level of directors.
Arcie Ewell announced that the flood that occurred in advisement as a result of a broken water pipe has been cleaned up and the advisors are in the process of moving back in.
Henry Lewis stated that Advisors Day would be either the last week of January or the first week of February. Advisors from the Medical Center Campus will be attending the monthly meetings at the other campuses. Some recruitment strategies that were mentioned included:
Placing ads in the campus newspapers,
Placing information on the WEB,
Targeting the natural science faculty, and
Preparing information packets to leave in select faculty areas.
Two consultants from Noel Levitz will be working with a College committee to help draft an enrollment management plan. Medical Center Campus has individuals on the College committee. The recruitment goal is a 2% increase for Fall Term, 2001-1 and a 2% increase in retention for the next academic year.
Susan Kah reported that conference day would be Thursday, March 1, 2001. All day and evening classes will be cancelled. Conference day may go back to the previous format of having the conference on a major campus with faculty, staff and administrators attending. Pam Singer stated that the faculty liked the sharing of faculty presentations and new faculty innovations used in the classroom.
Susan Kah asked if every faculty member of CASSC was aware of which constituency they represented. The areas in each of the four groups are:
Nursing/Midwifery/Medical Assistant/Practical Nursing 4 representatives
EMS/PTA/Respiratory/ Physician Assistant/Library 4 representatives
Vision/Dental/Medical Laboratory 2 representatives
Radiolography/Sonography/Radiation/HIM 2 representatives
Pam Singer reminded all faculty that they should vote for the members of the Promotions Committee today.
