The Library provides books, magazines, journals, newspapers, CD-ROMs, videos, online databases, and other materials for your research needs. In addition to our collection, we offer one-on-one reference assistance and classes in research strategies and skills.

Code of Ethics for Emergency Medical Services

Professional status as an Emergency Medical Technician and Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic is maintained and enriched by the willingness of the individual practitioner to accept and fulfill obligations to society, other medical professionals, and the profession of Emergency Medical Technician. As an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic, I solemnly pledge myself to the following code of professional ethics:
  1. A fundamental responsibility of the Emergency Medical Technician is to conserve life, to alleviate suffering, to promote health, to do no harm, and to encourage the quality and equal availability of emergency medical care.
  2. The Emergency Medical Technician provides services based on human need, with respect for human dignity, unrestricted by consideration of nationality, race creed, color, or status.
  3. The Emergency Medical Technician does not use professional knowledge and skills in any enterprise detrimental to the public well being.
  4. The Emergency Medical Technician respects and holds in confidence all information of a confidential nature obtained in the course of professional work unless required by law to divulge such information.
  5. The Emergency Medical Technician, as a citizen, understands and upholds the law and performs the duties of citizenship; as a professional, the Emergency Medical Technician has the never-ending responsibility to work with concerned citizens and other health care professionals in promoting a high standard of emergency medical care to all people.
  6. The Emergency Medical Technician shall maintain professional competence and demonstrate concern for the competence of other members of the Emergency Medical Services health care team.
  7. An Emergency Medical Technician assumes responsibility in defining and upholding standards of professional practice and education.
  8. The Emergency Medical Technician assumes responsibility for individual professional actions and judgment, both in dependent and independent emergency functions, and knows and upholds the laws which affect the practice of the Emergency Medical Technician.
  9. An Emergency Medical Technician has the responsibility to be aware of and participate in matters of legislation affecting the Emergency Medical Service System.
  10. The Emergency Medical Technician, or groups of Emergency Medical Technicians, who advertise professional service, do so in conformity with the dignity of the profession.
  11. The Emergency Medical Technician has an obligation to protect the public by not delegating to a person less qualified, any service which requires the professional competence of an Emergency Medical Technician.
  12. The Emergency Medical Technicianwill work harmoniously with and sustain confidence in Emergency Medical Technician associates, the nurses, the physicians, and other members of the Emergency Medical Services health care team.
  13. The Emergency Medical Technician refuses to participate in unethical procedures, and assumes the responsibility to expose incompetence or unethical conduct of others to the appropriate authority in a proper and professional manner.

Association of Air Medical Services (AAMS)

 

What you will find: AAMS is an international association, serving providers of air and surface medical transport systems. This site provides job listings, information about conferences and meetings, and other relevant news.

 

Florida Association of Professional EMTs and Paramedics

 

What you will find: provides job listings, information on continuing education and certification, and relevant news.


International Association of EMTs and Paramedics (IAEP)

 

What you will find: the IAEP is a union organization that deals with job-related problems encountered by employees in the Emergency Medical Services field.

 

International Rescue and Emergency Care Association (IRECA)

 

What you will find: representing men and women in the United States and Canada, the IRECA hosts EMS competitions and continuing education opportunities. An annual conference is held , which includes displays of rescue vehicles and industry suppliers.

 

National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT)

 

What you will find: provides information on NAEMT's Pre-Hospital Life Support Program, Advanced Medical Life Support Program, and the Pediatric Prehospital Care Program. Membership benefits include continuing education opportunities, annual conference invitation, health insurance opportunities, and a subscription to NAEMT News.

Critical Thinking


What is critical thinking: Beyond merely retrieving information, critical thinking involves the ability to reason, process and evaluate information, using it to problem solve and reach accurate conclusions.

How to evaluate information: Critically evaluating information is imperative, especially in the health fields, as it could potentially affect the health of the information consumer. Following are a few sites that will aid you in critically evaluating health information:

Health Information Literacy

What you will find:
a powerpoint that will aid you in identifying quality health education materials written at various literacy levels, in various formats and in other languages; help you in limiting your use of medical jargon; assist you in instructing consumers/patients to evaluate health education materials for authority, currency, and bias; and help you improve communication skills with your co-workers.

Medical Library Association (MLA):

The Health on the Net (HON) Foundation:
HON Code of Conduct (HONcode) for medical and health web sites

What you will find:
defines a set of rules to hold medical and health web site developers to basic ethical standards in the presentation of their information. You may search to determine if particular websites have obtained the HONcode seal.

Using case studies to practice your critical thinking skills:  Case studies present fictional medical situations that enable the learner to practice critical problem solving in a controlled environment without the threat of endangering a patient's health. The Emergency Medical Services program is a two-year Associate in Science degree program requiring a total of 73 credit hours.

The Emergency Medical Technician program is a college credit certificate that is a 1 semester course of study requiring 11 credits.
