The Library provides books, magazines, journals, newspapers, CD-ROMs, videos, online databases, and other materials for your research needs. In addition to our collection, we offer one-on-one reference assistance and classes in research strategies and skills.

Code of Ethics for Opticianry


It Shall Be the Ideal, the Resolve, and the Duty of the Members of the American Optometric Association:

  • TO KEEP the visual welfare of the patient uppermost at all times;

  • TO PROMOTE in every possible way, in collaboration with this Association, better care of the visual needs of mankind;

  • TO ENHANCE continuously their educational and technical proficiency to the end that their patients shall receive the benefits of all acknowledged improvements in visual care;

  • TO SEE that no person shall lack for visual care, regardless of his financial status;

  • TO ADVISE the patient whenever consultation with an optometric colleague or reference for other professional care seems advisable;

  • TO HOLD in professional confidence all information concerning a patient and to use such data only for the benefit of the patient;

  • TO CONDUCT themselves as exemplary citizens;

  • TO MAINTAIN their offices and their practices in keeping with professional standards;

  • TO PROMOTE and maintain cordial and unselfish relationships with members of their own profession and of other professions for the exchange of information to the advantage of mankind.

    American Optometric Association (AOA)

    What you will find: provides information on eye conditions, career  & job information, lobbying information, regular meetings & conferences, and an optometrist directory.

    Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmologists, Inc. (CLAO)

    What you will find: provides a contact lens doctor locater, regular meetings & conferences, and continuing education opportunities.

    Dade County Optometric Association (DCOA)

    What you will find: provides an eye doctor directory, community service opportunities, and regular meetings with continuing education opportunities.

    What you will find: provides scholarship opportunities and an annual convention with continuing education opportunities.

    What you will find: promotes formal opticianry education by identifying educational programs and providing career information.

    What you will find: provides continuing education opportunities, information about how to become a board certified optician, licensure exam information, a listing of career opportunities, and information on legislative issues.

    What you will find: provides vision care worldwide for people who cannot afford or obtain such care.

     
    Critical Thinking

    What is critical thinking: Beyond merely retrieving information, critical thinking involves the ability to reason, process and evaluate information, using it to problem solve and reach accurate conclusions.

    How to evaluate information: Critically evaluating information is imperative, especially in the health fields, as it could potentially affect the health of the information consumer. Following are a few sites that will aid you in critically evaluating health information:

    Health Information Literacy

    What you will find: a powerpoint that will aid you in identifying quality health education materials written at various literacy levels, in various formats and in other languages; help you in limiting your use of medical jargon; assist you in instructing consumers/patients to evaluate health education materials for authority, currency, and bias; and help you improve communication skills with your co-workers.

    Medical Library Association (MLA): Content Evaluation Guidelines

    What you will find: poses four sets of questions on which to evaluate the content of a website.

    The Health on the Net (HON) Foundation: HON Code of Conduct (HONcode) for medical and health web sites

    What you will find: defines a set of rules to hold medical and health web site developers to basic ethical standards in the presentation of their information. You may search to determine if particular websites have obtained the HONcode seal.

    What you will find: provides licensure requirements, examination schedules and applications, and laws and rules related to optometry.

    Occupational Safety and Health Administration

    What you will find: provides health standards, regulations, and inspections to prevent workplace injuries, illnesses and deaths.

    The Opticianry program begins in August of each year. 72 credits must be completed for an Associate in Science degree.

    Students may choose the full-time or part-time option.
