Code of Ethics for Physical Therapy Assistant


PREAMBLE

This document of the American Physical Therapy Association sets forth standards for the ethical conduct of the physical therapist assistant. All physical therapist assistants are responsible for maintaining high standards of conduct while assisting physical therapists. The physical therapist assistant shall act in the best interest of the patient/client. These standards of conduct shall be binding on all physical therapist assistants.

STANDARD 1
A physical therapist assistant shall respect the rights and dignity of all individuals and shall provide compassionate care.

STANDARD 2
A physical therapist assistant shall act in a trustworthy manner towards patients/clients.

STANDARD 3
A physical therapist assistant shall provide selected physical therapy interventions only under the supervision and direction of a physical therapist.

STANDARD 4
A physical therapist assistant shall comply with laws and regulations governing physical therapy.

STANDARD 5
A physical therapist assistant shall achieve and maintain competence in the provision of selected physical therapy interventions.

STANDARD 6
A physical therapist assistant shall make judgments that are commensurate with their educational and legal qualifications as a physical therapist assistant.

STANDARD 7
A physical therapist assistant shall protect the public and the profession from unethical, incompetent, and illegal acts.

Critical Thinking

What is critical thinking: Beyond merely retrieving information, critical thinking involves the ability to reason, process and evaluate information, using it to problem solve and reach accurate conclusions.

How to evaluate information: Critically evaluating information is imperative, especially in the health fields, as it could potentially affect the health of the information consumer. Following are a few sites that will aid you in critically evaluating health information:

Health Information Literacy

What you will find: a powerpoint that will aid you in identifying quality health education materials written at various literacy levels, in various formats and in other languages; help you in limiting your use of medical jargon; assist you in instructing consumers/patients to evaluate health education materials for authority, currency, and bias; and help you improve communication skills with your co-workers.

Medical Library Association (MLA): Content Evaluation Guidelines

What you will find: poses four sets of questions on which to evaluate the content of a website.

The Health on the Net (HON) Foundation: HON Code of Conduct (HONcode) for medical and health web sites

What you will find: defines a set of rules to hold medical and health web site developers to basic ethical standards in the presentation of their information. You may search to determine if particular websites have obtained the HONcode seal.

Touch Research Institutes

What you will find: founded by Dr. Tiffany Field of the University of Miami, the Touch Research Institute is dedicated to studying the effects of touch therapy and researches the effects of massage therapy at all stages of life from newborns to senior citizens.

The Medical Center Campus Physical Therapist Assistant Program is a two-year course of study requiring 74 credits for an Associate in Science degree.

The Medical Center Campus Massage Therapy Program is a Vocational Credit Certificate program that offers three tracks – Generic Option, Accelerated Option and Transitional Option. The Generic option is designed for those individual that do not hold a current Health care related certification/license. This option is a two semester course of study requiring 25 vocational credits (750 hours).

The Accelerated Option is specifically designed for licensed Physical Therapist and Physical Therapist Assistant. This option requires completion of specific generic option courses totaling 11.5 vocational credits. The last option, the Transitional Option, is designed for individuals that are licensed in designated health care professions. This option requires completion of specific generic courses totaling 17 vocational credits.
