The Library provides books, magazines, journals, newspapers, CD-ROMs, videos, online databases, and other materials for your research needs. In addition to our collection, we offer one-on-one reference assistance and classes in research strategies and skills.

Code of Ethics for Medical Lab Technology

I. Duty to the Patient

Clinical laboratory professionals are accountable for the quality and integrity of the laboratory services they provide. This obligation includes maintaining individual competence in judgment and performance and striving to safeguard the patient from incompetent or illegal practice by others.

Clinical laboratory professionals maintain high standards of practice. They exercise sound judgment in establishing, performing and evaluating laboratory testing.

Clinical laboratory professionals maintain strict confidentiality of patient information and test results. They safeguard the dignity and privacy of patients and provide accurate information to other health care professionals about the services they provide.

II. Duty to Colleagues and the Profession

Clinical laboratory professionals uphold and maintain the dignity and respect of our profession and strive to maintain a reputation of honesty, integrity and reliability. They contribute to the advancement of the profession by improving the body of knowledge, adopting scientific advances that benefit the patient, maintaining high standards of practice and education, and seeking fair socioeconomic working conditions for members of the profession.

Clinical laboratory professionals actively strive to establish cooperative and respectful working relationships with other health care professionals with the primary objective of ensuring a high standard of care for the patients they serve.

III. Duty to Society

As practitioners of an autonomous profession, clinical laboratory professionals have the responsibility to contribute from their sphere of professional competence to the general well being of the community.

Clinical laboratory professionals comply with relevant laws and regulations pertaining to the practice of clinical laboratory science and actively seek, within the dictates of their consciences, to change those which do not meet the high standards of care and practice to which the profession is committed.

Blood: fulltext available beginning in January 1990. Fulltext is not available for the last year.

Lancet: selected articles from June 1996-present are freely available from the publisher's website at http://www.thelancet.com. Fulltext from January 1991-present available via Academic Search Premierand Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition; fulltext from March 1990-present available via General Reference Center Gold, Health & Wellness Resource Center and InfoTrac OneFile.

American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB)

What you will find: the AAB is a national professional association whose members are bioanalysts, medical technologists, medical laboratory technicians, and physician office laboratory technicians.

American Medical Technologists (AMT)

What you will find: AMT is a nonprofit certification agency and professional membership association. They issue certification credentials to medical and dental assistants, clinical laboratory personnel, laboratory consultants, and allied health instructors.

American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS)

What you will find: ASCLS is the preeminent organization for clinical laboratory science practitioners. Their website provides information about upcoming conferences, continuing education opportunities, career resources, and a link to the Florida Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (FSCLS).

American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP)

What you will find: ASCP is a nonprofit medical society, which serves pathologists, medical technologists, cytotechnologists, histologic technicians, phlebotomists, and medical laboratory technicians. Their website provides information about continuing education, certification and careers.

American Society for Microbiology (ASM)

What you will find: ASM is a professional association that represents 25 disciplines of microbiological specialization plus a division for microbiology educators. Their website provides information about careers, continuing education classes, and awards & grants opportunities. It also includes a link to the Florida branch of the ASM.

American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT)

What you will find: ASPT is a certifying agency of phlebotomy. Their website provides testing & certification information and continuing education opportunities.

National Phlebotomy Association (NPA)

What you will find: NPA is a nonprofit organization for education and certification of phlebotomists. Beyond certification information, their website also offers a career center.

 
Critical Thinking

What is critical thinking: Beyond merely retrieving information, critical thinking involves the ability to reason, process and evaluate information, using it to problem solve and reach accurate conclusions.

How to evaluate information: Critically evaluating information is imperative, especially in the health fields, as it could potentially affect the health of the information consumer. Following are a few sites that will aid you in critically evaluating health information:

Health Information Literacy

What you will find: a powerpoint that will aid you in identifying quality health education materials written at various literacy levels, in various formats and in other languages; help you in limiting your use of medical jargon; assist you in instructing consumers/patients to evaluate health education materials for authority, currency, and bias; and help you improve communication skills with your co-workers.

Medical Library Association (MLA): Content Evaluation Guidelines

What you will find: poses four sets of questions on which to evaluate the content of a website.

The Health on the Net (HON) Foundation:
HON Code of Conduct (HONcode) for medical and health web sites

What you will find:
defines a set of rules to hold medical and health web site developers to basic ethical standards in the presentation of their information. You may search to determine if particular websites have obtained the HONcode seal.

Using case studies to practice your critical thinking skills:  Case studies present fictional medical situations that enable the learner to practice critical problem solving in a controlled environment without the threat of endangering a patient's health. Following is a website that offers practice case studies:

Online Databases

Miami Dade College's Libraries subscribe to a number of online databases that provide access to full text reference materials, such as medical dictionaries, and to periodicals, such as journals and magazines.

What you will find: offers information on HIV/AIDS treatment, prevention, and research. Topics include a drug database, clinical trials, and vaccine research.

American Association of Blood Banks

What you will find: provides a searchable directory of international blood donation centers. It also offers information about testing of donor blood for infectious diseases and information about transfusions.

American Red Cross

What you will find: provides information about red cross services, such as disaster preparedness, CPR, AIDS, swimming & babysitting courses. Also provides information about volunteer and donation opportunities.

Atlas of Hematology

What you will find: provides pictures, showing normal cells from blood and bone marrow and continuing to a substantial variety of diseases, such as leukemias, anemias, and carcinomas.

Bloodline

What you will find: this online resource for hematology education and news features hematological images and slides and hematological case studies.

Career Guidance Resources on the Internet

What you will find: scroll to the bottom of the page for links to the websites for Occupational Outlook Handbook, Florida Health Careers, Choices Planner and other career related sites.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

What you will find: provides up-to-date information on many aspects of health care, including diseases and conditions, vaccines and immunizations, and emergency preparedness and response. It also includes a section with health statistics. Within the CDC is the Division of Laboratory Systems, which has information on the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA).

Chemistry: WebElements Periodic Table

What you will find: provides an interactive periodic table. An audio and textual description is provided of each element.

DNA from the Beginning

What you will find: provides a website that covers the basics of DNA, genes, and heredity. Each concept is explained with dynamic animations, video interviews, and image galleries.

Florida Coalition of Professional Laboratory Organizations, Inc. (FCPLO)

What you will find: FCPLO is a network of professional medical laboratory organizations in the state of Florida. Their website provides news related to the professional, especially legislative issues.

Florida Department of Health: Clinical Laboratory Personnel

What you will find: provides applications for renewal or new clinical laboratory licenses, Florida Statutes pertinent to clinical laboratory personnel and continuing education information.

Genetics Home Reference: Your Guide to Understanding Genetic Condition

What you will find: maintained by the National Library of Medicine, this site offers information about testing to identify changes in a person's genes, chromosomes, or proteins.

Gray's Anatomy of the Human Body

What you will find: features 1,247 vibrant engravings—many in color—from the classic 1918 publication.

Guide to Clinical Laboratory Testing

What you will find: offers information on over 2,000 medical laboratory tests and test combinations performed to detect medical conditions and illnesses, including HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. An index of trace elements is also included.

What you will find: one section of this site provides information for parents on medical tests and exams that might be performed on their child(ren).

Lab & Diagnostic Tests

What you will find: provides thorough information on test samples types, normal values, purposes of testing, and clinical implications.

Lab Tests Online

What you will find: intended to aid the patient in better understanding clinical lab tests, this site describes why different types of lab tests are given and how to interpret the results. It also describes different conditions and diseases and preventive screening measures that can be taken. This site is searchable by test name or the name of the condition or disease, including HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Laboratory Testing

What you will find: provides information about the accuracy of laboratory tests along with information about interpreting laboratory test results. This site includes specialty sections on transfusion medicine and urinalysis.

Laboratory Tests that Detect Cancer

What you will find: part of the Cancer Cure Foundation's website, this section provides information about cancer detection and prevention laboratory tests that are considered alternative or less toxic than standard, conventional laboratory tests.

MedlinePlus

What you will find: includes a Medical Encyclopedia, Medical Dictionary, Interactive Tutorials on common procedures and conditions, and Doctor and Dentist Directories.

MERCKSource Resource Library

What you will find: includes A.D.A.M. Health Illustrated Encyclopedia, Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary, Merck Manuals, and the PDR Family Guide to Over-the-Counter Drugs.

National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel, Inc. (NCA)

What you will find: NCA is a nonprofit organization that conducts certification of medical laboratory personnel. Their website provides an application for examination, an examination schedule, and information on recertification and reinstatement. It also has a career section.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration

What you will find: provides health standards, regulations, and inspections to prevent workplace injuries, illnesses and deaths. A special section of this website is devoted to safety and health information relevant to laboratories, such as evaluating hazards in the laboratory and producing a chemical hygiene plan: http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/laboratories/index.html.

Screening and Testing to Detect Cancer

What you will find:  provides information on laboratory tests that can aid in detecting many types of cancer.

The MDC Department of Medical Laboratory Technology offers an Associate of Science degree program. The program requires a total of 76 credits and can be taken over a five-semester full-time schedule or an eight-semester part-time schedule.
