Registered Nursing (Associate in Science)
Requirements
To be eligible for admission to the Nursing Program at the Medical Center Campus and the Homestead Campus, you must meet these criteria:
- You have applied to and been fully accepted for Admission or Readmission to college credit courses at Miami Dade College. Designate the Medical Center Campus or the Homestead Campus as your “preferred” campus and enter one of the following Pre-Select codes for your preferred program option:
- Generic – 23030
- Bridge – 23029
- Accelerated – 23032
You may complete the MDC application online at http://www.mdc.edu, and request your transcripts from previous schools to be sent directly to MDC Medical Center Registration Office, located at 950 N.W 20 th Street Miami, FL 33127.
- You should schedule an appointment with an advisor at the New Student Center Advisement, 305-237-4141 in order to take the College Placement Test (CPT) through Testing Services, Room 1303, Medical Center Campus, 305-237-4275, or through Testing Services at any MDC Campus. After getting your CPT results, if you have not qualified for college level math, then you must complete at least MAT 1033 (Intermediate Algebra). If you have a bachelor degree or higher from an accredited institution within the United States and are applying to the Accelerated Option, you should take only the reading portion of the CPT. Accelerated Option applicants must complete the Reading section of the CPT with a score of 78 or higher.
- After completing any needed remedial courses based on your CPT results, you will need to complete the following required General Education and Natural Sciences courses:
General Education Courses
- ENC 1101
- PHI 2604 (Humanities requirement for students who matriculated 1998-1 or later)
- SPC 1026
- PPE 1005
- DEP 2000
- CGS 1060 or CCT Test (call Testing Services for info)
Natural Science Courses
- CHM 1033/ 1033L
- BSC 2085/ 2085L (completed within 10 years of desired date of entry)
- BSC 2086/ 2086L (completed within 10 years of desired date of entry)
- MCB 2013
Note: If you have a bachelor degree or higher, your General Education courses will be waived. All Options are required to have no more than a total of three (3) grades of D, F, or W in the natural science courses for the program. All Options are required to have no more than two (2) enrollments (D, F, or W) for any individual science course for the program.
- At this point, you are eligible to submit a program application to the Nursing program even if you have not yet completed the following General Education courses: DEP 2000, PPE 1005, SPC 1026, MCB 2013 and CGS 1060. Although those courses can be taken along with nursing courses, we encourage that you complete them before starting the Nursing program. You are also encouraged to apply to any applicable option that is convenient to you.
Application for program selection to the School of Nursing should include: your MDC degree audit, a receipt of a one-time, non-refundable $25 application fee from the Bursar Office. Applications must be received by September 1st for January admissions, and May 1 st for August admissions at the New Student Center Advisement. Your cumulative grade point average (GPA) is extremely important in the selection process. Incomplete applications will not be considered for selection. Late applications can be considered only if space is available.
Note: Be sure to indicate whether you are applying for a full-time or part-time track. The Accelerated Option is only a full-time track.
- Bridge/ Advanced Placement Option: Option candidates must show proof of qualification for the program (i.e., license or certification in their health care profession) and completion of the required prerequisites courses. Applications will be accepted prior to the completion of the NLN (NACE) and/or the Skills Update Course. Students needing to take the NLN (NACE) and/or the Skills Update Course must call 305-237-4141 to make arrangements two semesters prior to the desired entry. (See Pre-select Bridge Option for additional Information).
- Accelerated Option candidates must provide proof of having at least a Bachelor’s degree and complete the Natural Science Courses prior coming to the nursing program.(See Pre-select Bridge Option for Additional Information).
- Foreign Applicants – Please note that transcripts of Accelerated Option candidates whose degree was earned outside of the United States will be evaluated on a course-by-course basis. Graduates of foreign schools must complete the College Placement Test (CPT) Reading and Writing sections and all courses that are required based on test scores as well as the computer competency. The Degree Audit should show the Natural Science Courses mentioned above and the general education courses in order to be considered for selection to the Accelerated Option.
Selection Criteria
Selection is based on the students’ cumulative grade point average (GPA) and successful completion of prerequisite courses. Students who are currently enrolled in all prerequisite courses of the chosen option are also eligible for selection.
