Circulation Services (Circulating / Non Circulating) | Top

General Information
The Service Desk is located close to the Library entrance. All books borrowed from the Library must be checked out and returned to this desk. If the Library is closed, you may return books to the outside book drop next to the information booth. Another book drop is located near the entrance of the Library. All materials are protected by an electronic system that prevents unauthorized removal of books. Students may occasionally be asked to open briefcases, large purses or backpacks if the alarm goes off as you pass through the exit.

  • All books, except those marked Reference or Reserve, may be checked out.
  • Service Desk personnel provide continuous service to users during the hours the Library building is open.
  • Periodicals are to be used in the Library only.

CIRCULATING

All books in the general collection are circulating books.
There are several special collections within the circulating collection.

The McNaughton Books are a collection of best selling current interest non-fiction and fiction books.  They are arranged on the shelf by title.

The ESL (English as a Second Language) collection is a resource that addresses the bilingual needs of our students.  Here one can find many of the well-known books that have been read in high school by English speakers.  These books have been rewritten in an easy-to-read, easy to understand abbreviated format.  Bilingual students will feel very comfortable using these versions of popular American classics.

The Funeral Services Collection provides books dealing with grief, sorrow and other topics related to Funeral Sciences.  While mainly addressing the needs of those majoring in Funeral Sciences, materials may be borrowed by anyone.

NON-CIRCULATING

The Reference Collection contains books that are generally meant to be consulted for specific information rather than to be read from cover to cover.  Since it may be necessary to refer to them at anytime, they may not be checked out.  They are kept on open shelves in the reference area on the second floor and may be used in that section at any time.

A special Ready Reference Collection is kept at the Reference Desk for convenience in supplying quick answers at the desk or by telephone.  These books are available to users in this area.

The Reserve Book Collection serves the students in a narrower academic setting.  The instructor places materials to be read by his/her class on reserve.  This collection is located behind the Circulation Desk.  Materials here are to be used within the Library only and must be signed out with a valid MDC smart card/library card.
