A library card, which is the MDC
card, is necessary to check out books and to use reserve materials
and unbound periodicals. The MDC card may be obtained by
presenting a paid course schedule and a picture identification in
Room 4208 (Student Life). Library cards are permanent and should be
kept for the length of time the student will be at MDC. A lost
library card/MDC card must be reported immediately to
prevent charges for books you did not borrow. Students may borrow
books with a library card from any MDC campus as well as any
community college or state university library across the state of
Florida.
The Service Desk is the only place from
which books can be checked out. Books are returned through the book drop
located outside the Library’s main entrance and at the Service Desk.
Regular circulating materials may be kept for the period specified
on the date-due card in each book. This is usually a three week
period and can be renewed twice. However, end-of-semester clearance
procedures sometimes require that this period be shortened in order
to have all loans cleared by a certain date.
Overdue notices are mailed to the home
address as a courtesy; failure to receive a notice does not relieve
the borrower of responsibility for returning a book when due, as
shown on the date-due card in the book.
1. Students are financially responsible for all
library materials checked out on their Library cards. Transfer of
Library materials among one’s friends without an official change of
charge through the circulation system does not relieve the student
of this obligation. It is an infringement of College regulations to
use another student’s card to obtain Library materials.
2. Lost books, damaged books, or books which are returned after a
stated deadline become the borrower’s financial obligation; the
Bursar’s Office will charge for the cost of the book for each
obligation.
3. Obligations are payable at the Bursar’s Office, Room 1154 (Scott
Hall).
Borrowing Other Material from Other Libraries | Top
Through an intracampus or interlibrary loan, students may borrow
books from other campus libraries when they are not available at North
Campus. LINCC Search, which is the online catalog available through the
Internet provide a complete listing of all books available at the eight campus libraries as
well as the other community colleges in Florida. Further information about LINCC Search (the online catalog) is given below. Intracampus and
interlibrary loans may be requested through LINCC Search. Loan books will be held for students at the
Periodicals/Interlibrary Loan Department. Go to the Service Desk to pick
up interlibrary loan materials. To borrow materials from non-MDC
libraries through interlibrary loan or outside the community college
system, please check with a reference librarian.
Books and other materials in which faculty members have made special
assignments are included in the library through use of the reserve
collection. Faculty members place these needed items on reserve in
the Library so they will be available to the greatest number of
students. The circulation staff member will assist in locating
reserve materials and will check them out to students for in-room or
overnight use, as specified by the course instructor. A library
card/MDC card is necessary for all reserve transactions. All
reserve materials checked out overnight are due by 9:00 a.m. the
following class day. Late returns may cause suspension of overnight
check-out privileges.
Textbooks: A special collection of textbooks used in courses
is available either at the Circulation/Reserve Desk or are located
in a special location. This collection is sponsored by the Student
Government Association in collaboration with North Campus
Administrators. These books are limited to in-library use only.
Check with the Circulation/Reserve Desk for more information.
LINCC Search is the online catalog that
allows you to search for books and audiovisual materials in the
Miami-Dade College libraries and other community colleges
in Florida. LINCC is an acronym standing for Library Information
Network for Community Colleges. You can search by author, title,
and subject quickly and effectively.
With LINCC Search you can search the holdings of North Campus as
well as the other campuses of Miami-Dade. When you locate a book in
LINCC Search, copy down the call number so you can locate the book
in the Library. If you have trouble finding a book on
the shelf, please ask for assistance at the service desk or the reference
desk. If you are not able to find books on a specific topic, or the
book you are looking for is not at the North Campus, ask a reference
librarian for assistance.
Books in the North Campus Library are
arranged by the Library of Congress Classification System. This
system attempts to divide all knowledge so that a book on any
subject can be placed under some letter between A and Z. Each of
the larger categories, as shown below, covers a very large subject
area.
A General Works
B Philosophy. Psychology. Religion
C Auxiliary Sciences of History (General)
D History (General). Europe (General)
E-F History: America
G Geography. Anthropology. Recreation
H Social Sciences
J Political Science
K Law
L Education
M Music
N Fine Arts
P Language and Literature
Q Science
R Medicine
S Agriculture
T Technology
U Military Science
V Naval Science
Z Bibliography and Library Science
In each of these twenty-one very general subject
areas, the major specific subjects are given their own individual
numbers.
A more complete diagram of the Library of Congress
Classification System is shown under the section “Library of
Congress Classification of Books” located below.
The call number is the key to locating a book
on the shelf. Call numbers usually consist of two parts: the
upper half is the Library of Congress Classification number, the
lower half is a number usually assigned to the author of the book.
A third or fourth line may sometimes be added. The reference
collection is assigned ‘REF’ on the top line above the Library of
Congress number.
When looking for books on the shelves, it is
necessary to note the exact number of the call number.

Computer databases contain vast
amounts of information. To locate the desired information, a search
strategy is needed. To facilitate searching in many of the computers
available for student research, it is necessary to combine KEYWORDS
and CONNECTORS in order to retrieve desired information.
Constructing a Search Strategy
1. Select KEYWORDS (usually nouns) that define your topic.
Example: air pollution, United States, Canada
2. Select a CONNECTOR (and, or, not) to combine keywords.
Example: air pollution AND United States
In order to find recent information in periodicals the North Campus
Library subscribes to several print indexes as well as the
electronic indexes mentioned above. Most of these indexes list
articles by subject. Below is a list of some of the print periodical
indexes and abstracts in the library’s large collection. Once
material has been located in the index, LINCC Search (the catalog)
must be consulted to see if the library subscribes to the periodical
that has been located.
HUMANITIES INDEX

humanities.
NEW YORK TIMES INDEX

our Library include popular magazines such as Essence, Harper’s,
House Beautiful and National Geographic. Special publications
(journals) written in more scientific language, such as JAMA: The
Journal of the American Medical Association, Smart Computing in
Plain English, and Journal of Economic Literature represent some of
the journals held by the library.
Periodicals are kept in paper
format (unbound) for a period of one to two years. After that, some
periodicals are available in microfilm format.
The periodicals reading area occupies the
southeast corner of the first floor.
Unbound periodicals are obtained
from the Service Desk by presenting a Miami-Dade College
Library card/MDC card and a request slip. All periodicals and microfilms
are available for room use only and may not leave the Periodicals
Area. The library provides copying machines for those who desire
copies of articles from periodicals or microfilms (see
“Photocopy/Duplication Facilities”).
The microfilm
area holds back issues of periodicals and newspapers on microfilm.
The student may locate these items on their own and use them in
conjunction with the reader-printers provided. Help with the
reader-printers is available from the Service Desk/Periodicals staff if needed. The cost
of copying microfilm is 10 cents per page and dimes must be used.
