Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

International students whose native language is not English are required to present an English- language placement score from TOEFL or the ACT/ESL, which may be taken at MDC. If your TOEFL score is at least 550 on the paper-and-pencil version, 213 on the computer version, or 79 on the Web-based version, you are exempt from English-as-a-second-language courses. However, you must still take the CPT.

If you have not taken the TOEFL, or if your score does not meet MDCs entrance requirements, you need to take the ACT/ESL Placement Test. This computerized test measures vocabulary, reading and listening comprehension, and grammar. The ACT/ESL test is also required for any student who needs to improve proficiency in English, such as those who took ESOL classes 11th or 12th grade. This test determines which classes you will take. Whatever the case, we are here to help you get from where you are to where you want to go. Click here for more information.
