Refugee/Entrant Vocational Education Services Training (REVEST) Program

Mission Statement

The R/EVEST program will provide, in the first year of proposed contract, services to over 2,000 eligible participants who may occupy one or more of the following slots available through the program: 2000 VESOL, 540 PSAV, 1,200 Employability Skills, and 35 GED/Adult Basic Education. The program will provide academic assessment, vocational training, vocational English for speakers of other languages (VESOL), and employability skills training. If immigration trends continue to indicate need, the second year of the proposed contract will meet the same enrollment goals. The VESOL curriculum will focus on providing participants with the English language skills required for work in the United States, and will include aspects of vocational acculturation, as well as an emphasis on technology and job search preparedness. It will not be geared toward preparing students for pursuing academic degrees or for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), however REVEST advisors are trained to give orientation to students interested in going on the academic studies in the future. Employability skills training will be provided via a two-week seminar to be offered in conjunction with each level of VESOL. It will focus on job search techniques, the culture of the workplace, and job maintenance. All clients will be served with the goal of making them qualified for high-demand employment or employment advancement. Fields that are in high demand within the State and local community economy will be stressed, as will those occupations that pay a wage capable of advancing the participant beyond basic self-sufficiency, thus providing a valuable service to the community in general. Successfully overseeing the placement and adaptation of refugees and political asylees.
