Course Descriptions
ENC 1101
This is the first required general education core course in college level writing. Students will write unified, coherent essays using various methods of development and review sentence and paragraph structures and writing fundamentals. English Composition I is required for both the Associate of Science (A.S.) and Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree programs. This course fulfills the Gordon Rule requirement that students demonstrate proficiency in college-level writing through multiple assignments. 3 credits.
Prerequisites: Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) score of 440 or more on the verbal test; American College Testing (ACT) score of 17 or more on the English subtest; or MDCC Computerized Placement Test (CPT) score of 83 or more on the English subtest

ENC 1102
This is the second required general education core course in college level writing. Observing the conventions of Standard American English, students will compose informative and persuasive essays, write responses to a variety of literary genres and/or non-fiction, and produce a documented paper based on research. English Composition II is required for the Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree program. This course fulfills the Gordon Rule requirement that students demonstrate proficiency in college-level writing through multiple assignments. 3 credits.
Note: This course must be completed with a grade of "C" or better.
Prerequisites: ENC 1101 or equivalent with a grade of "C" or better.
English Composition II focuses on critical thinking and questioning that lead to effective reading and writing. Writing is a process that includes prewriting (invention) to begin developing ideas, drafting and then revising the discourse, and proofreading the work.

LIT 2480 Issues in Literature and Culture |
| Competencies |
Great class discussions on cultural issues, films, presentations, and thought provoking readings make this sophomore level course a great choice for your third level English and Oral Communication requirement. This class fulfills the Associate in Arts degree oral communication requirement. This course fulfills the Gordon Rule requirement that students demonstrate proficiency in college-level writing through multiple assignments.
Prerequisites: ENC 1101 and ENC 1102

Advanced Composition and Communication 3 credits |
| Competencies This sophomore level course addresses techniques of critical thinking, persuasion, and argumentation. Students will refine their composition skills and develop their oral communication skills by examining and discussing a range of issues. This class fulfills the Associate in Arts degree oral communication requirement. This course fulfills the Gordon Rule requirement that students demonstrate proficiency in college-level writing through multiple assignments.
Prerequisites: ENC1101, 1102 or equivalent with a grade of “C” or better (3 hr. lecture)

SPC 1017 Fundamentals of Speech Communication |

SPC 1017 is a survey course into the field of human communication. Students will explore the various facets of communication (e.g., interpersonal, small group, business/professional, public and mass) by applying theories, models and concepts from various relevant disciplines including psychology, sociology, communication studies, etc. to achieve an understanding of the role communication plays in our everyday lives. SPC 1017 students will engage in a variety of activities such as group projects, informative speeches and written analyses to further develop and refine their communication skills. SPC1017 satisfies three of the nine credits needed for the communication component of the A.A. degree track as well as three of the six credits required for the A.S. degree track.
This course fulfills the Gordon Rule requirement that students demonstrate proficiency in college-level writing through multiple assignments.
